Ah yes, the Beautiful Game, the Game of Hyperboles, actual football , whatever you want to call it, the madness of another World Cup is upon us once more. And on the day of Australia's first match since...whenever it was, I thought it would be nice to start a thread on this awesome game of incredible skill, impassioned fans, and really, really bad hair. So here are the groups and results so far. Anyone found a favourite team yet? Anyone willing to guess which two teams will go through to the final 16 from each group? THAT WAS HOT HOT HOT! So frickin' amazing. 84 minutes of growing despondency and then, three in 8 minutes! A*mazing! Loves on this game so much right now.

Edit: Oh, and did anyone see the footage from the start of the game during the national anthems? The camera panned up to the Australian crowd as they were all standing, bellowing out Advance Australia Fair, and in the very middle of the frame were 2 Japan supporters, looking extremely "how the hell did we end up here?" I can just imagine them finding their seats and going "oh...crud" when they realise who they were sitting with. Hi-larious!

Oh wow! Those last few minutes must have felt electric. Were there any people who left the stadium early, not wanting to see Australia get defeated? Hehe, bet they're sorry now. ;D And hehe, I loved how at the start of the game the Australian crowd were singing the anthem slightly out of tempo and had to catch up by mushing the words together. "AUSTRALIANS ALL LET USSSSSS REJOIIIIIIICE FOOOOR WE ARE yornfee"

It's much more football than AFL where you get to use your hands and rarely actually use your feet at all. Foot + ball = football, not AFL. Come on, you get special treatment if you catch it, how is this football?

We had the thing with the anthem when we were at the Comm Games, the sound is all odd because you're singing to what you hear but by the time you hear what the people on the other side are singing it's been and gone so everyone can get out by hearing the people on the other side and thinking they're fast. That was badly explained. It's also funny on the TV in that the athletes look like their slow because they're singing to what they can hear but the music the TV station is transmitting is from closer to the speakers so they get it earlier.

OMG - never in a fit would I have guessed that would have scored in the last couple of minutes - nevemind three! It was sooo awesome though!!!

I'm gonna get slashed when I say this, but it wasn't that good of a game... well at the least the first half especially, balls getting kicked randomly, hoping that it would go to someone, people running without that balls, and then that goal from Japan Schwarzer running up

Now I'm not soccer expert, but I'm a bit of a nut when it comes to the world cup
Netherlands seem like a good, team, at least when they versused Serbia/Montengro.

I so wish I was over there right now and be able to watch! Clare I envy you so much!!! The game I wanna see is Australia versus Croatia - it's gonna be AWESOME, I mean it's going to be like the deciding match to see who gets in the next round, I mean let's face it, Brazil is definitely going to get in. Does anyone know where I can win tickets

It's still more football than AFL. It's not like every person on the team uses their hands.

Apparently, the sports commentators at SBS have always referred to soccer as football during their broadcasts. I don't know why, but I think that's really sweet.

And Korea wins their first match against Togo, 2 goals to 1.

Yeah, that was dodgy. But to be fair, he also overlooked a clear foul Australia pulled on Japan in the goal square thingy (I'm so, so knowledgeable ), so technically, Japan should have had a penalty kick in the second half. And that would hvve dampened the Australian morale even more had it got in. So the ref was an oblivious nut, but his obliviousness did end up cancelling each other out. And as Mornir K said, at the end of the day, we won!

Perhaps she was talking about Johnny Warren? The late soccer player and aficionado who is credited with spearheading the prominence and importance of soccer/football in the minds of the Australians? There was a documentary on his contribution just before on SBS tonight. I remember hearing something about how he said there was a curse on the Australian soccer scene in that.

Edit: And Ecuador just won its match against Costa Rica, which means that no matter what happens in the ECU vs GER game next week, those two countries are going through to the next round. WOOT for the Germans! (They're my semi-hemi-demi default team. I'm choosing a few to relieve the heartache when my support inevitably leads to one of my prefered teams' downfall and loss during one of the knockout rounds. That always happens. Woe. )

haha has anyone seen that nike add, where that monster thing is dissing out Aussies and so the guy goes and kicks a ball and knocks him off. The slogan's like 'History's against us - stuff history' It makes me laugh
