I like to define my music tastes as "alternative pop", though CDs in my collection include dance, goth and rock. Some of my favourites include:
New Order, Pet Shop Boys, The Smashing Pumpkins, Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, The Stone Roses, Coldplay, The Whitlams, The Strokes, Pulp, The Cure, and Blur.

My music taste is usually classed as 'alternative' although i don't think you can really class it. I like bands like Tool, APC, Placebo, The Cure, David Bowie, Muse, Radiohead, PinkFloyd, PJ Harvey etc.

i'm really glad someone started a thread about music, i also get told i listen to alternative music, but i's prefer to think i have ecclectic taste. i love manu chao (hence my name) patrice, michael frani, tori amos, les nubian. also new muse album is very epic, the first track is almost a parody of themselves. oh, and at moment am completely obsessed with a group called mattafix, i think there from the uk, i have their album on almost constant repeat.

This must be my first post in months.
I'm also into the 'alternative/indie' stuff. Muse, Le Tigre, The Dresden Dolls, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Grates, the Go! Team, Magic Dirt, Cake, and so on. And Garbage and No Doubt, I love them, but they're a bit more mainstream.

i like lots of different types of music. i dislike most jazz music. it's not easy to classify what kind of music i like. it depends on the particular song. i like many songs of some bands/artists and only one or two of others. lots of eighties music rocks and i tend to like pop and dance music. i like modern love songs as long as they arent too soppy or pathetic. i dislike 50s love songs. yuck. i like music by avril lavigne, evanescence, ace of base, dido, sash, a few songs by robert miles, a few songs by sting (particularly Fields of Barley). i like the song I just died in your arms tonight by The Cutting Crew. there are 2 songs by smokie that i like a lot; If You Think You Know How to Love Me and She Rides Wild Horses. i like Young and Proud and Dont Turn Around by Ace of Base. Edge of Heaven is nice too.

i have never heard of any of these bands New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Echo and the Bunnymen, Joy Division, The Stone Roses, The Whitlams, The Strokes, Pulp, The Cure, and Blur. Okay! Someone needs to be educated! Having said that, I haven't exactly heard much of all of the bands mentioned, so I'll stick to what I know best, which is what I've left standing above. I should point out now that this will be a long post; I'm particularly passionate about my music tastes! I've listed three songs for each band that you might want to listen to if you can - that will give you a better idea of what they're about than my descriptions can. Joy Division There's seems to be a kind of consensus that The Cure created goth music. Actually, it was Joy Division. The Cure are more romantically aligned. It's true, just ask Bono; he admits it! (He's also admitted privately that New Order are U2's biggest influence. Joy Division were a dark band that self-destructed after less then two albums when lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide at the age of 23. Their two albums, Unknown Pleasures and Closer can be so depressing, albeit in a beautiful way, that I find them difficult to listen to. Yet the brilliance is there. After Curtis' death in 1980, the remaining members would continue on to become New Order. Three key songs: Love Will Tear Us Apart, Transmission, She's Lost ControlNew Order My favourite band of all time. While Joy Division may have created goth, New Order more or less invented modern dance with the highly-experimental song "Blue Monday", released in 1983. They are very anti-publicity, and their music is a perfect example of the art of not compromising. After unofficially splitting up for five years, they started releasing songs again in 2001, but arguably haven't returned to their glory days of the 1980s. The Joy Division/New Order influence on music is now beginning to be felt, with young bands such as Bloc Party and The Killers declaring their love of JD/NO songs. The Killers actually named themselves after the then fictional band The Killers which was featured in the clip of New Order's 2001 single "Crystal." Three key songs: Blue Monday, True Faith, RegretPet Shop Boys Highly innovative dance duo. Sensitive, intelligent and well-constructed dance-pop music. I grew up listening to PSB - the first concert I ever went to was when they came to Australia in 1994 (I was 12 then), and they've remained one of my favourites since. Three key songs: West End Girls, Being Boring, Always on my MindEcho and the Bunnymen Usually played support for New Order on international tours in the 1980s. They are probably the most underrated 80s band. Depending on the album you listen to, their music can be claustrophobic, liberating, or dark and spacey. Either way, they're certainly worth a listen. Three key songs: The Cutter, The Killing Moon, All My ColoursThe Stone Roses Legendary late-80s, early 90s band that crashed and burned after two albums due to ego clashes within the group. Rumours of a reunion have intensified lately. Three key songs: Fool's Gold, This is the One, She Bangs the DrumsThe Whitlams You don't know The Whitlams? MATE, WHERE DO YOU LIVE? They're arguably Australia's greatest band. The band history is fraught with personal tragedy and the songs reflect this to an extent. I'm not going to say anymore. Go and listen to them now. Three key songs: No Aphrodisiac, Blow Up the Pokies, I Make HamburgersThe Strokes Young New York rock band which has really taken 70s sounds and modified them so they sound modern and fresh. Nevertheless, it sounds darn good and you've probably heard several of their songs without knowing it. Three key songs: Someday, Reptilia, JuiceboxPulp The lead singer, Jarvis C0cker, is the greatest living lyricist. No arguments, he is. Pulp's portrayal of the miseries of working-class Britain is breathtaking at times, though their career has been appropriately rocky. Three key songs: Common People, Disco 2000, Lipgloss The Cure Ah, The Cure. People look at singer Robert Smith and say: "GOTH", but when you listen to his songs, many have links to a more subdued form of new Romanticism. Either way, The Cure are now the idols of many modern bands, and that can only be a good thing. Three key songs: Boys Don't Cry, Close to Me, Just Like HeavenBlur Rivals (and superiors) to fellow Britpop band Oasis. Their music is often funny with a political twist - they portray a different aspect of British society to Pulp, but they do it about as well. Three key songs: Parklife, Country House, TenderAnd I forgot to mention: Depeche Mode Dance-goth, if that makes any sense. Their early years were dreadfully inconsistent but they've stabilised since the mid-80s, producing good electronic music. Three key songs: Everything Counts, Blasphemous Rumours, Enjoy the SilenceHere are some bands which will (hopefully) shape the future of pop/rock/alternative music in some form or other: Bloc Party, Keane, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Haven, My Vitriol.

I've only heard of about half of these. Is the new Muse one good? I've got one of their previous ones... I don't listen to music much anymore. On my ipod is a whole lot of disney and musical music because I'm never in the mood for other things (and I have a shuffle so I can't have different playlists). That said, I do love Queen, Muse, Linkin Park, some Metallica (love Run to the Hills but I'm not into a lot of their other songs), Iron Maiden... But what I actually listen to whenever I listen to my ipod includes Disney music (Lion King, Alladin, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid, Jungle Book), Andrew Lloyd Webber musical music (espec Phantom of the Opera), Beach Boys, Reel Big Fish, random movie themes I found on one of Mum's CD (including Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Cool Runnings...), some Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra, the entire Apollo 13 soundtrack and a bit of Bond. Fairly random selection I have there, don't you think?

Pulp The lead singer, Jarvis C0cker, is the greatest living lyricist. No arguments, he is.
Indeed. Also, wasn't he the lead singer for the Weird Sisters in the HP4 movie? ;D ---- Generally speaking, I like dance music. I never used to be into it, but there's something about it now that appeals to me. It just seems to be so much more about the beauty and artistic manipulation of music and sound, as opposed to the "oh, look at me, I'm such a gorgeous/depressed/cool/b!tchy idiot, everyone should watch my video clips, I can't sing and I'm only here as the face in front of someone else's words" music. I'm a big fan of Pendulum at the moment. Probably since I got a sub and I used to worship my Darude CDs. I had a phase of adoring Sarah McLachlan and Dido, too...while I was single I tend to like whatever I can relate to at the time. For a while, Rock DJ was "the theme". While we were in Britain, my friends and I always asked for Bon Jovi (Living on a Prayer - because we were ). When I got back, Good Luck (Basement Jax) was the new "theme song" for my group. Failing that, once a Blobby Williams fan, always a Blobby Williams fan. He can take the mickey out of himself and looks like he's having fun. And he writes his own stuff. So he is the musician, not just the face.

i had an epiphany on my way in today - I love my ipod. I know, I know. That doesn't sound very earth shattering, but wait. I have a really eclectic taste in music - my playlist varies from Bing Crosby (oh, I love Bing) to Led Zepplin (I blame my dad) to Missy Higgins (no excuses) to Nine Inch Nails and Cake. I pop my ipod on while I'm marching up from the car park, suddenly, I have a soundtrack! It's like living in a movie... Every 3.5 minutes (roughly) a new and completely different song pops on and the days shifts subtley... This morning I went from bouncing along "running with scissors" (ben lee) to floating on a "stairway to heaven" and as I sat down I was "swinging on a star"...
(It's the small things, really, isn't it?)
