Good point Clare. It's the little people that will pull the trigger and kill you at a moments notice. I'd probably be one of those trigger pulling little people, and I certanly know how to hold a grudge.

I would fight and I would kill.
But I'm not going to go mercilessly slaughtering the enemy, even if they do it to my people. I would be working to free us from oppression, and I would go about it sensibly. If I was the leader of the resistance I would retain a tight hold on my troops, and I would set the same standards for my friends as for my enemies.
If, for example, Talisha went off and shot a civilian enemy, simply because they were there and because they're one of Them, she would be punished. I would not stand for acts of brutality from my own side, anymore than I would accept it from my enemy.
I would not accept "an eye for an eye" either. Military installations and soldiers would be our targets. We cannot hold our friends and our enemies to different standards. I would negotiate with my enemy, and of course try to understand them, but they can get the hell out of my home, and they can stop subjugating my family and friends.
They might be hard line, and that might be absolutely merciless towards me and my resistance, but I can hardly expect them to behave any differently, if I don't set a different standard myself. And any member of my Resistance who doesn't like it had better change their sorry ways. I will work hard to make my enemies respect me for who I am and for the control I have over my people, and the policy of resistance that I employ.

These are my answers to the questions 1. I'd be the same as KSL. In fact, I've always wanted to join a rebellion, fight, the lot. Test my strength and courage to it's full, do something worth remembering for once. So I could be somebody and not a nobody. 2. I think what makes a persons view different about their safety/freedom is how selfless they are. If they are selfless, they would be willing to put their life on the line for other people, if they are self-centered, they think only of themselves, and they join the faint hearted who can't or won't fight for what is right.

Well Kayt, you'd have my support. I do believe you would make a fine and charismatic leader.
However, I don't believe that faint-hearted necessarily equates to self-centred. In the case of someone not wishing to lay down their lives for others, does it necessarily make them self-centred and therefore selfish? The issues of altruism (basically unselfishness) and selfishness seem too complex to be distinguished by a willingness to lay down one's life for another. One can fight for what is right and good, die for their friends and for everything else but still have some selfish motivation. One can fight for their name to be remembered... for immortality, for their own peace of mind. Perhaps a fainthearted person might look beyond the here and now and see things in terms of the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number or some version of utilitarianism. If someone is acting for the benifet of a greater number of people rather than laying down their life for others, does this make them fainthearted selfish and/or self-centred?

*Looks at Clare with a blank expresion* ........... *Post went right over her head* Yeah........I'm with Kayt. I wouldn't go out there and butcher people just casue they were there. If they attack me, I'll attack them, but I'm not the kind of person that makes the first move. I wait and bide my time, then when you least expect it........wait, that makes me sound evil and mean........forget what I just said, I'm just rambling now.

I would not accept "an eye for an eye" either. KSLKayt I totally agree with you here! If there is fighting, it needs to be civil and fair, you cant just go around shooting innocent people without facing any consequences. I also think you'd be a fine leader. I'd be proud to fight in your resistance.

Why did they chose a pitifully small and hostile environment like Australia to take over? Because they can... Large land mass - small people to land ratio - BIG impact on the rest of the world. I think we could be targets for invasion. In the same way that the Americans have 'Pine Gap' in Australia, we are positioned (in relation to the rest of the world) very strategically... And Kayts right, it's not eye for an eye, because wouldn't we be just as bad as them (presuming that an invasion happened with the loss of many lives) When I say that I would kill, I mean that I would defend myself and those around me, needlessly could up in conflict, by what ever means...

Yeah, by kill I mean that I would defend myself at any cost. But all in favour of electing Kayt as our leader say 'eye'!
All : Eye!
Looks like your our leader, Kayt. ;D

I was thinking this morning when I was writing that all this would make a great story... Not the tommorrow Series, and I haven't read too many war books cause it's probably been done but the whole running away or staying and everything. I think the most interesting thing was not only everybodies completely different views on this issue but there take on the situation to begin with... Like the questions and clarification people wanted to know and where everybody sees them selves ending up... It'd be a great writing sugesstion maybe to post the original question again and get people to write what their story would be... Where they see themselves and the challenges faced... I know most writers here don't do 'real life' writing but I know I've loved reading all the replies so far... ...

It would make an interesting collection of stories, wouldn't it.
I think I'd like to see that.
The collection begins with the editor describing the scenario of the invasion and the opression of the people.
Then there is a collection of short stories where each writer describes how they see themselves, and what their place would be in that world.
It could be very interesting.

And each of them set in the same imaginary situation. So if I'm writing as the leader of a Resistance Cell, someone else can write as one of my rebels.
If Clare is running guns to me, perhaps I could mention her as my supplier.
(Sorry, i like stories thatlink to each other)

Stories that link are cool... as long as they aren't too predicatable and you can see the links coming from a mile away... The whole idea might be something to work/think on...

It would be nice as a group project. But everyone would have to be absolutely clear on who everyone else was, and what their place was in the scenario.
And the best way to link would be to make no big deal of it, like just in passing, I might say...
"I sent Glynnavyre out on a recconaisance mission" and so the reader can just say Oh cool, I know who Glynnavyre is.

You can put 'Tessa' in the book... cause not only is that my real name but I'm not actually Glynnavyre (surprise!)... I think my real name would sound better in the book anyway! hahahaha ;D

sorry for spamming! hahahahahahahahaha... It's really werid to see my real name up on the screen...! It was weirder to see you start to write your bit of the book refering to me as Glynnavyre!!! hahaha a good laugh though! You know if this book ever did happen I think I may even be able to push my inhibitions of writing aside for long enough to contribute something... ...maybe...

Well, okay....
What do others think of the idea? Do you think we could try it? I'd be happy to act as a sort of co-ordinator/editing type figure.
We could do it to christen the Writersmerge!
Writers, non-writers alike, what do you think of the idea? Would you like to contribute. If enough people want in, then perhaps we could have a try, and see what we think.

I love it! It would be fantastic as a collection of stories, especially considering the wonderful variety of opinions everyone expressed on the subject. And the title's already taken care of: Your life or your freedom? grabs the attention nicely. There's a real cross-section of characters and options which guarantees a wide variety of stories with vastly different locations, people and dilemmas.
I WANT THIS TO HAPPEN!
