Too bad I don't watch much TV. I would've probably not even found out about the ad if it didn't get so much bad publicity. The stupid thing is, i'm already here too, and surely Aus sells itself well enough without that ad anyway. You should see the number of tourists we get here on the Gold Coast. It's quite nice, actually. Most of them are nicer than the locals!

Gah, catwhisper, I used to work down the Gold Coast & live at Tamborine...was working in Surfers specifically. The tourists were so bahsome! I was just trying to go about my day-to-day business and they were ALWAYS in the way. I hate it how tourists believe that they don't have to worry about their actions, littering habits or dress sense when they're in another country. They come, they see, they abuse and they leave - why should they have to worry, it's not their home!
BAH! Tweaked a nerve there I'm afraid. SO glad I'm not working there any more.

I agree with Lucy... we'd get nicer tourists too if we promoted ourselves as being the host of the lauch of the Sending!

I finally saw this ad last night! I've seen better ones trying to sell Aus to us tourist types adn althought I don't find the use of 'bloody' offesnive in any way it seems a bit out of place in my mind
Really they should just make an ad saying "Australia: The host of the launch of The Sneding" and people would be there like a shot...wouldn't they?! YES. Australia: The Sending is Coming... Make it all suspence-filled and you'll have people flocking over in droves wondering what this "Sending" is... I think the main problem I have with the ad is what you've said there too, Lucy - there's nothing wrong with "bloody hell". The problem is that it seems out of place. It just sounds really forced.

I just don't think it's that offensive. What is... my teacher/basketball "coach" (not that he has a CLUE) said the f word at another high school when us kids were all in uniform representing our school! That's bad... and we actually have a pretty good rep for a state high school!

Yeah, it's not offensive at all. It's just ridiculously out of place, and sounds forced.
God, high school...I remember having a swear word slip out once, and the shocked look on the teacher's face...it was as though she'd never heard anyone swear in her life!

I think it sounds alright.
The thing is, most of the comedies we see over here have the Australians saying 'bloody' quite often, so i suppose i don't see it as being out of place. No offense meant.
I think its all about stereotypes. The ads arent necessarily how australians see themselves, but how the world sees their stereotype perhaps.
For example, and ad for Britain would possibly show people wearing bowler hats and carrying umbrellas, even though no-one really wears bowlers anymore

i used to watch the girl from the tomorrow when i was younger. i really liked it. no one ever said bloody in that. that was australian, right? and there was a tv series called water rats too. that was good, and i think it was AUSie too, and they didnt talk in the typical stereotype, tho it was a lot closer to it than TGFT was. there was another tv series that i think was AUS too but im not sure. yep, it is.. i looked it up on google to find out its name. Spellbinder. it was very good. the didnt fit the AUS stereotype at all, and they didnt say bloody. i actually think bloody seems like a very british think. esp. bloody 'ell.

i love the girl from tomorrow - read the books
i think that its stupid - i have an english boyfriend and he says the word all the time, and all his family says it too, and all his family' s family. He says its traditrional in england. why let a popular-used word be banned? ist not like its offending any one!
yes, its out of context, but who cares, its just an add!!

Yeah, but I suppose they might have even designed it to be like that, causing controversy, because look at all the extra attention they've gotten from the publicity. And i think they have more supporters than those who are seriously offended by the words "bloody hell"

Yeah, we use it. Its not considered to be a particulary bad swear word.
