Over the time that I've been here, it hasn't taken me long to figure out that you are a very diverse and creative bunch I'm sure there are musicians here hiding their talents- What intrument do you play? What type of music do you enjoy playing? Don't play an intrument? Wish you could? Which one? And so forth. I'm interested in that music baby I myself play the piano, and not incredibly well either. I hated it when I was younger and never practiced (to spite my horrible teacher mainly), hence my playing isn't as good as it should be. I love my music now (and my new teacher! ) and can't get enough of it, though I went off liking piano during the time I was playing in the school musical. Bleh. Never again! It was just too much, but I admit it was fun in the end. Am trying to learn guitar this year and would like to play the cello and bagpipes but that's probably never going to happen *sigh*

Mindy the Muso: What intrument do you play? Piano & guitar. I was heavily into music when I was at school. I was in choir, was in loads of community musicals (singing, rather than in the orchestra), and even had a go at playing this massive orchestral xylophone for a bit. In the end I finished 8th grade pianoforte and 6th grade Musicianship with honours and was burnt out. So when I turned 18, I took a break and focussed on science stuff. I miss piano like crazy, now. One more year and I could have put letters behind my name (A. Mus), but I can always go back to it. I've been playing guitar since I was 16. My first boyfriend thought he was a rock-god, and taught me a little. I found it easier to just hear a song, and pick out the chords in all honesty - most songs consist of 4-5 chords, even if it's finger-picking. It's so much easier than piano, probably because I'm not doing exams on it What type of music do you enjoy playing? Piano: Chopin. My absolute favourite composer. Yes, I have managed to play Fantasie Impromptu when I was practising all the time. Guitar: anything I can sing to. With guitar, I took a whole different approach. I will play guitar when I want to, and so it'll be fun. With piano, I was supposed to practise 3 hours a day, and it was a REAL chore in the end. It's similar to the web site work - if I'm having fun, I stick around a site. If I'm obliged to do something, I drag my feet. I love playing anything by smashing pumpkins. Their guitar music is always just that little more challenging.

i can play the flute, dont ask me how well. I enjoyed teh celtic music, andones with tunes that get stuck in your head. Played in senoir wind band, and the begginners band coz they had no flutes. I can play a little piano but not very well.
My sister plays the Cello, Natally. Not very well, but she still plays it all the same. Appartantly for bagpipes you need to practice for 3yrs before your even allowed the instrument.

That even lessens my hopes of playing the bagpipes. I think the good old voice box can be included here too Kaylan, it is a sort of all natural intrument as far as I can see.
I forgot to add which music I like to play. Right now, I love playing film scores. But I think I'm heading towards the more traditional classics again after hearing a friend of mine play some beautiful pieces. I stopped doing grades and exams a long while ago because I was terrified of them and it slowed me down, so I basically play what I choose. I love playing songs by favourite bands or singers, especially when my friends and I take over the music room for a lunchtime. We jam and sing on whatever intrument that happens to be there, which is usually just piano and guitar, and the ol' glockenspiel if we're desperate. Though, my opinion is that modern songs aren't all that inspiring to play unless it's something real special. Just playing chords over and over again... maybe my hopes in playing guitar this year will be flattened soon.

I play woodwinds - played clarinet and sapprano sax all my school life, then also dabbled in harmonica (rock harp), ocarinas pipes and others cultures flutes and stuff. Then I brought a guitar about a month ago and have been playing melissa etheridge songs badly on it. I am aiming for country in my own musical stylings. Love.

Oh, and I forgot to add what kind of music I sing. I can sing some opera stuff, mostly punk and some gothic things. I like that!
I wish I could play the piano. It could totally benifit towards my band!

[glow=limegreen,2,600]Well I can sing, all sorts of different stuff. Mostly I sing along to CDs but it isn't bad
I used to play Celtic violin but I gave that up (mum wasn't happy - she played violin when she was young but can't any more and had just bought me a new violin). Before that I had played recorder for a couple of years but gave it up as well. However I took it up again and skipped straight to Grade 4, learned all the music very quickly and went up to grade 5. I am currently having a break from recorder, and I'm not sure if my parents will be able to afford lessons this year.
I also learned piano for about a term but gave it up. It's not really my thing
I really want to learn guitar to accmpany my singing, and would probably prefer learning it to recorder.
I am also a dancer. Irish dancing, though you may laugh (and please don't ), is very physically demanding and takes constant practice, once you get good, to retain. I have been dancing for ... ummm ... 6 years. If you don't believe that Irish dance is hard, go pick up a copy of Riverdance or Lord of the Dance . I'm sure you've heard of them!!!![/glow]

Me myself and I want to play the piano. I do own a guitar, but it's untuned, and with no idea how to tune it, and terrible pik-playing, that will never happen.
Almost everybody I've met wants me to go on Australian Idol for my singing, but I'm not really into Australian Idol. I like all types of music (excpect killer metal) and would probably play slow tunes if I ever learnt to play the piano.

Right, the story:
Started with piano. Didn't really like it, had 4 teachers in 4 years and then quit.
Onto clarinet. My school has a year 7 music program where you learn an insturment (or voice) for a semeser (although now it's a year, anyway when I did it was a semester). I got the clarinet and learnt it first semester year 7.
Saxophone. Second semester of year 7 I took up the alto saxophone, occassionally playing the tenor. Hated the teacher.
Returned to Clarinet. Have played clarinet since (so years 8, 9 & 10 as well as the one semester in year 7)

I play guitar, bass, drums and the flageolet. I used to play trumpet and a bit of piano, but I had to give them up to play guitar. I'm hoping to pick them up again soon. I also sing a bit in a band. My favourite instrument to play is guitar, because it's so versitile. Its great being able to play my favourite rock songs, then something more laid-back and jazzy. I'd really like to play double bass and violin. I've had a bit of a go with violin before and i managed to get a few songs out that didnt sound like cats being murdered

I used to be able to play the piano a bit. I think the only tune i can remember how to play now is the Star Wars theme.
I've also played the ocarina

I played trombone all through school, but it's been a good few years now, so I shudder to think how bad I'd be if I tried now. I also play recorder - used to play bass recorder in my school group and descant solo. I just bought myself a proper treble but I'm having difficulties adapting to the new fingering. I like to play folk music on the recorder, and blues on the trombone (although I was always pretty bad at it).
I can also play "Yellow Submarine" on guitar, "Sound of Silence" on piano and "Scotland the Brave" on an harmonica. And really simple drum kit (rock, swing or walz rhythms).
Of all instruments, I'd really love to learn to play the cello, because I think it makes a beautiful sound.

Irish dancing! I love irish dancing! I used to love Riverdance and I'd be pretending I could do it while watching it... Doing that would be so much fun! (although exceedingly exhausting too) I think I should start playing piano again just in the background because I suck so much now and I used to be ok! And I want to practise playing more than one instrument because last time I tried to play any song that isn't Beauty and the Beast (did it for an exam, can still play it so long as I've got the music) anytime I got confused I'd try to play clarinet fingerings... Although now I have SO much trouble reading bass clef since I haven't done it in 3 and a half years and I've been doing a LOT of treble clef reading... Yeah, kangaruth, i love the cello. I love watching people play it. If I have a million dollars (to cover the fees ) I would be learning the clarinet (still), saxophones (alto and tenor) and the oboe. Maybe if I still had time I'd check out the cello, but I don't have that many hands to carry them all Cat

Ah, music! One of the most plendiferous things ever invented. My first instrument was the piano. Both my parents played piano to a high standard (my mother was a prodigy, playing pieces she'd heard other people playing at the age of 3!) and my nana was a music teacher, so it was rather inevitable. I love the piano. My nana gave me her piano when she was in a nursing home and I love it dearly, even though it's a little bit sick. That's the piano I learnt to play on and it reminds me of my nana. However, because it's sick, I mostly play a full-size electronic "grand" piano that my Timothy bought me when he won a small poker tournament. It's lovely! It sounds like a real piano and I can put headphones on, so nobody can hear how badly I'm playing. I like to play mostly classical stuff. My favourite composers are probably Chopin, Haydn (his piano pieces are beautiful!), Mozart, Beethoven and sundry others. My favourite piece of music is actually "Jessica's Theme" from the soundtrack from The Man From Snowy River. It's a gorgeous piece and allows you to put so much interpretation into it. Just lovely. I also play the recorder and I used to accompany my dad on the organ in the old days, when we used to go to church. I wasn't too bad at the old recorder. Next comes the flute. I should really open up that case a bit more often and give the flute a bit of a work-out. It's a lovely instrument. I've always wanted to learn the violin and I'm lucky in that I now have an instrument - I just need to find a teacher. I'm really looking forward to that. If there's one more instrument I'd like to learn, it'd be the Uilleann Pipes, which is the Irish version of the bagpipes. They make a gorgeous sound and they're unique in that you don't actually blow into them - the air is pumped into the pipes through a bellows that you work with your elbow. But I'd be happy to learn the bagpipes too.

Hehe, our piano (an upright) has never been in tune for all the time I've known it. We keep going to get one of our family friends to tune it but he lives really fa away. So, for all my piano exams the in-tune piano always sounded wrong to me, sounded like I was playing something wrong. Also, one of the keys didn't work (which has since been fxed by said family friend) so I got used to hear the four key chord with only three keys. Was very distracting in the exam..

My extended family is pretty musical as well. My mum and all her siblings (2 brothers, 2 sisters) all learnt music at school. My aunt and uncle are both music teachers, one of my cousins plays percussion in an orchestra, another plays trombone and is in two bands and another is an amazing celloist who travels around in string ensembles.

Ok....I've onto my seventh year of playing cello (ive been playing since grade 3) and i just did Grade 5 in AMEB exams. In the middle of this year my school is having a music tour around America and Canada, and they need a cellist so I'm kinda....excited about it.
I also play bass guitar and guitar, but I teach myself instead of taking lessons.
My family owns 3 bass guitars and 4 electric guitars, a drum set and a keyboard (and of course a cello), so that probably reflects what sort of music I like. My Dad used to be in a band (playing bass) and once got onto TV for it....even if it was for a bet...
I enjoy playing anything really, especially if it flows well or if I've heard it before. It always seems easier to play if you already know how it sounds.

hey Bunne, its going to sound like i am quoting your whole post I started with piano at 5. taught myself how to play first, and didn't find a teacher till i was 9. i learnt for 4 years, till she had taught me all she could (it was actually my Great Aunt, so that was cool), then i learnt the church organ by my friends mum. that was so cool, playing a double keyboard and learning to use all the foot pipes and drones. i still play piano, and was deprived of one for years until we got a massive electric one just recently. i love playing it through the sound module on the computer - its all digital and all that stuff, so its really cool (and really expensive!). i love to play classical mainly, cause thats what i was taught, but i also love to play any Tori Amos. i love her so much. she is my musical idol. i am slowly getting into jazz, but its hard cause i am not much good at freestyling and jamming. with my classical i got to about grade 7. i did music for the HSC and played the piano, so i had really intensive lessons again for two years. Bun, i also love to play Jessicas Theme! I love it so much! and the pieces from the movie The Piano. i can play some of those in my sleep - i played them for the HSC and practices them so much, they have never left me. i joined the school band in year 4 (playing the piano). i was in the band for my whole school time from then on. i was also in a concert band and we went on huge tours. it was awesome. i played flute mainly, and still do, and sax and clarinet. i tried the oboe once and it nearly killed me, all that stored air in the lungs! had a go at all the instruments really, but was no good at any brass. love whistles! i have a whole collection of tin whistles and recorders and love to play celtic style music. its probably one of my favourite musical genres of all. its so haunting and beautiful and uplifting and depressing all at the same time. I too, like Bun, want to learn the Uiliean Pipes! They have the most amazing sound, and whenever i hear them i want to cry! i really want to get a low whistle too - they are so beautiful. the sound conjurs up images of misty mountains and green hills and old-worldly times. i love it so much! i also want to learn the violin - i ihave one, but need a teacher! i can pluck the stings but have no idea how to use the bow! i'm a little scared of it! same as the guitar. i have one, and my boyfriend is an amazing guitarist, but i am just no good at it! i cannot strum - i find it hard to hold the rhythm. but i can finger pick songs... ummm, i have heaps of instruments i want to learn, but i would love to be able to play cello and celtic harp. i think, being a pianist, that i would be able to manage the harp. i also want a harpsichord - i love playing Bach, and he wrote alot of great pieces for harpsichord. i also play hand percussion and really really bad harmonica! and i wish i could sing! i did heaps of choir, but thats different to being able to sing and hold a tune by yourself! i also have this crazy thing called a Xaphone, or the pocket sax. it was invented by this guy in Hawaii, and is about the size of a clarniet (a bit shorter), with holes like a recorder, but spaced out differently, and had a tenor sax reed. its really weird, and like a clarinet, doesn't have linear fingering. it sounds a little like some middle eastern reed instrument, but its a beautiful sound, breathy and deep. i'm still learning that. O and i want to learn sitar! i love ravi shankar!

A celtic harp is called a clàrsach, or cláirseach (with a ch like in loch - /today's gaelic lesson). I very nearly bought one not long ago, but it was pretty expensive and they are apparently very difficult to play (plus I just moved out to Switzerland and wouldn't have been able to bring it).
I used to sing in choirs, too, but my voice isn't strong enough and my range too limited to sing properly.

[mystics]I play the violin and percussion (all the way from kit to marimba!)
I've played the violin for *counts on fingers* 12 years. I have an 'accoustic' violin and, thanks to eBay and excellent £/$ exchange rates, an electric one . I don't really have a favourite composer, but I enjoy dipping into film scores as there are some really beautiful pieces out there that were written for films.
I started learning to play the drums when I was about 13. I joined an orchestra and that was when I began to play other percussion instruments, like timpani and vibraphone. I then joined a samba group which was a real great way to play a different style of music. We ended up performing in a piece set up by a French group called Trans Express (even though it wasn't really samba!) which eventually led to us performing in France twice -the second time was in Paris on the eve of the Millennium. There were 1000 drummers from all over Europe, standing on specially constructed platforms around the Pompidou Centre, performing together with a string quartet and two opera singers who were suspended from cranes. It was amazing ;D
I'd really love to be able to play the piano. For some reason it was an instrument I didn't ahve much interest in when I was younger, but now I'd like to start learning. I'm hoping I'll be able to pcik it up. I can play the right hadn melody to most things, it;s just the chord/left had bit I struggle with. Hopefully I'll master it someday![/mystics]
