Do girls still go thru the huge hype over formals? We did when i was in school. i was going thru wedding mags with ma and i was thinking bout it. maybe its like a practice for wedding hype

The yr11s recently had their formals. It was hilarious listening to them go on about when they had to leave to get their hair done and their make-up done yadda yadda...
Last year for our social it was pretty hyped up. Our coordinator (who is awesome and has a daughter in our year) even let people wear their hair down because it was straightened and they didn't want it to get a crease... *sigh*

Our coordinator ... even let people wear their hair down... Does this mean you have to wear your hair up or back as part of your uniform? If so - goodness. I thought my school was strict, but we never had to go that far. As to your question, Lix, I think social/formal fever depends on the person. I really could have cared less, but my friends got excited about anything like that. In our case, it was the debutante ball (which I chose not to attend), which made the girls look like a whole bunch of brides off to a mass wedding, so there may be some merit in your "practice for getting married".

Lucky you Weird, some girls just handed out some invites to the year 10 formal this morning We never have formals at my school, and these girls just decided that it was time for one, so now we're all expecting this crapolar event And now my friends and i are trying to decide wheter to go or not. We either stay home and avoid the bopper girls talking about what lipstick they'll wear or which idiotic boy they'll drag along, or we can go to the formal, wear something extreme, and annoy the hell out of them I think i've figured out which one i'll do

id die if i was at askool like that cat-eyes....now as for formal hype everyone in my skool got hyped and into everything. i sat there listening and gettin 'excited' about what each girl was waering. since there was only 25ppl in my yr adn hmmm like 11 girls who were all really individual and creative it waws fun. half of them made their own dresses (the best one was kathleen who made the red dress with black beading from titanic replica)!!! so i was interested in that aspect and went along to sit in teh corner and drink beer with the guys i found it entertaining to watch

I loved my formal - it was a great way to get everyone together for some fun. Most of the schools i my area have they're formal after their last ever day of grade 12. But we had ours in June so as to not clash ;D
And yay for extremes ;D We had three couples come as colours, with flouro yellow, green and pink hair and suits/dresses, a few pretty medieval dresses and the most gorgeous gothicy dress. It was a simple purple dress but it was covered in this black gauzey material with a very intricate spider web design. We had two guys turn up in boxes and thongs and a few of the snobbier girls had dresses that I would label as extreme for how little of them there actually was ;D

id die if i was at askool like that cat-eyes Oh, there's more. Hair must be natural colour (not neccesarily your natural colour, just natural colour, so no blue, green, pink etc) and one of the girls in my year level was like in-house suspended last term for having pink and purple in her hair (she had to sit in this room and do her work there and she wasn't allowed into normal classes etc until it was died back). Hair must be back and off your face. These rules still apply for school photos, and believe me there are ALWAYS fights about this between teachers and students... And THEN we get into the uniform... Strange, but I actually got excited for my year 10 and 12 formals too. Strange cos I usually don't give a d@mn about that sort of thing. I remember showing off my dress, picking out matching jewelery, and actually having those image-concious convos with my best friend.
And then we went and nearly burned Wollongong Uni down, and got the whole campus evacuated, had both the firemen and cops called, and I got home by 10:30pm. Ahhh, year 12 formal

I think a more in-depth version of that story is going to have to be told, Megana. Right about now.

i reckon! that sounds really interesting!
cateyes id never survive. neither would anyone from my skool! my skool was happy to get us wearing any shade that looked like white and teal! board shorts ,thongs and salty multi coloured hair was the normal (unless it was bleeched by the sun). and if the shirts where buttoned up with out a balck slogan t-shirt underneath it they gave out awords for obaying the rules ...gosh id really die and dont see the point of patheitc rules like the hair tied back stuff *sigh* its so petty!

i'm not excited..i hate dresses and make-up, and doing my hair but oh well, so long as my friends are going i'm sure i'll have a good time
Ok..Miska..where the hell did you go to school, and how do i get there?!

I remember being so excited for my formal...I had this maroon velvet dress, with a navy blue satin lining & double straps. Sounds weird but yeah...
Oh, to be 17 again...my formal was a bit dismal actually. It was wholly run by the principal, and it was in a place we all affectionately called 'The Barn'. Talk about small town...Parents had to be there, and rather than just a big party, it ended up being a dinner, with like 30 minutes of a crapola DJ afterwards. I remember my boyfriend at the time causing dramas...he was this hippy/dope smoking moron and he got annoyed that I was wearing makeup for my formal :-|

*is triumphant* to be out of a school that demands everyone must wear labels yipee! yes i am sure that i would have completely rebelled and gone goth to a formal in my old school- just to shock. here however i do not need to- i think they're doing something on a boat but it sounds pretty lame and anyway i'll be overseas for it- plus my school is so completely massive you can never be sure that you will actually know anyone that turns up. I am however going to farewell meals/drinks with classes- it will be fun.

wow its so interesting hearing what everyone did! maeve ull have fun hehhee and go rebelling!
my yr 10 dress was a chocolate brown velvet one. very plain scooped neck (front and back). very conservative no splits or anything and the scop was still quiet high! i had my hair at chin length too.
my yr 12 dress was a strapless sparkely green but under different lights went golden or purple. agin no splits or anything. i had a golden/purple shear shawl that i wore too. my hair was back in a french roll and i had chocolate brown lippy on that was it tho and the same bacl strappy shoes i wore to my yr 10 formal ...
as for places yr 10 was at our local surf club and was actually so much fun! yr 12 was up in pittwater near the river/harbor stuff. nice place but way to formal for who we were. we also had to all meet at the skool and catch a bus to teh venue together. that really sucked but meh it was still an ok nite
