i would like to state for the record that i love and adore you all, and what i say is not me attacking you or your views, just trying to show you my way of thinking about it:
We have a government which has been fairly elected by the majority of people in this country. It's unfortunate, but sadly, this is NOT a nice country.
It is full of selfish, ignorant people who talk about mateship while failing to lift a finger to help anyone. The reason John Howard is so succesful despite being terrible for this country, is because he manipulates the selfish and especially the racist opinions of the Australian public.
I know people (including Kayt) are upset about certain issues, I know that some people in this country are complete bastards who would kill their own mothers just to collect the hit money but seriously, we live in a f**king brilliant country. Some people may be rascist, hell a lot of people may be racist, but people of different racial backgrounds go to the same school here and people aren't blowing other people up or holding guns to their heads and asking them who they call god. SOME STUPID THINGS HAPPENED! we aren't the only country to screw up! look at germany for christs sake. the idea of going to berlin used to chill me but now, after reading about the stolpensteine I want to go there, i want to give the site of the berlin wall a big kick and i want to pay for a stumbling stone to help people understand what happened. (obviously i am of german heritage)
my aunt's family are papua new guinean, a girl i loved like a sister cannot go to public school because she is half white and that makes it to dangerous for her. her house is broken into most nights and valubles are looted. her name is debby. she is just ten years old. she could be murdered any day. don't tell me i'm not lucky, i'm one of the luckiest people in the world.
and don't tell me the government isn't doing anything to stop the violence. they're going to help the png government to avoid furthur corruption.
We talk about a mulitcultural society, but a majority of Australians whole-heartedly support the government's policy on refugees. I can walk down to the shops and pass an enourmous number of ordinary suburban, CANBERRAN (and therefore left-wing) Australians, and not meet a single person in favour of allowing more refugees into the country. Why? NOT because we don't have the resources. NOT because they're "queue jumpers". Simply because they're not Australian, and a majority of the time, THEY'RE NOT WHITE!!! Australians are some of the most racist people in the world.
i love debby, i do. i ache for her every day she live sin danger. she wanted to grow up here. she was sent home. it might just be some innocent everyday people to you, but i know what queue jumpers mean to real people like a 10 year old who wanted to stay in a school where she was not a second class citizen because she was dark.
you know that these refugees are being held for a reason. if they checked out then they'd be let in. obviously something didn't check out. and it takes a hell of a lot of money to get on one of those boats so they could have done things by the book.
i don't see why someone i love so much should be denied the right to live here when she applied lawfully when someone else can just jump in a boat and be given the right.
in american waters you get one warning then they start firing, i think we're doing ok.
And even if they do know, they're so selfish, THEY DON'T CARE!!! as long as they get that tax-cut, or baby-money they're happy to be lied to and treated like idiots.
we're young, we're trying to be rebellious in what we think and say, but if i had a family and i was working at a crappy job to support someone who doesn't work at all i would be looking for every little bit of help i could get. people who love their families aren't selfish.
i guess in the end i don't want to be told that what i believe is wrong and selfish and stupid because i love people who feel so god d**ned blessed just to be living here. without the giant fences, the dogs, the security systems. where you can catch a taxi, trust your government to take a break from putting hits out on each other long enough to finish building a hospital or even leave something in your will to your wife.

you might think i'm being ridiculous and that our world is above those stupid basic human rights issues. but they aren't rights for some people. and just because we all sign a piece of paper promising all the nice things to each other it doesn't make it real.
I love my country. and if it doesn't come up to scratch, where exactly ARE you going to go live?
where are you going to get away from all these nasty people? where are you going to live in a country free from the rigours of international dealing? where are they going to support you when you're sick or lose your job? where are you going to live safe with food in your belly?
and if you still want to cry me a river then go live in port moresby for a while, go hang with debby, maybe once YOUR friends are raped on the street or YOUR father is murdered or YOUR house is unsafe you'll think.
