Ah, yes, the elusive fifth book. The good news is that, yes, there is a fifth book. The bad news, I'm sad to say, is that this fifth book hasn't been written and published yet. Rumours abound as to when it will appear on the bookshelves and I think October 2005 is most accurate date of publication that we've settled on. Of course, most of us are hoping it will actually come out in October this year, around the time of our next Moonfair...

It would have to be the fastest publication of a book in history to be out by October this year, unfortunately.
Dragon, I assume you read all four books and not just Ashling?
Did you read Ashling before all the others? How bizarre. Did it make any sense at all?

Although it would have been a strange to read the 3rd book first, if Ashling is the only one you've read your in luck cause it IS the best one out of the four so far released...
I think that the Keeping Place wasn't a patch on Ashling... but thats just my opinion! ;D

My friend got her mum to find her an interesting book, and her mum got her Ashling so she's reading it and not listening to me or Lara who's also read the series about the fact she should read them in order.
She doesn't understand half of it. She keeps asking me all this stuff like who/what are beforetimers, and who was Ariel and stuff and we're just going "Read the first two and you'll know!"

I can't imagine trying to read Ashling without having read the first two previously. In fact, when I first read The Keeping Place, it had been so long since I'd read the first three books that I found I'd forgotten certain facts. Especially facts involving a certain Matthew and a certain bunch of slavers... So despite the fact that I'd already read the first three books (several times in the case of the first two), I found I had to go and read them again before I could read The Keeping Place, just so I'd remember what had happened previously. Wow - that was quite a ramble. I must really need that cup of tea...

hello
i've spoken to some publisher friends who let me know that the fifth book is completed and will be published this year in oct or nov in time for christmas. it will be called 'the sending' and it will be the final book in the obernewtyn chronicles. for those who are interested, the third book in the legendsong series (darkfall, darksong etc) will not be published until 2005-2006, just to keep us all hanging a little bit longer!!!

Hello Anna.... a lot of bookstores have a release date for the end of this year.... ... but I got a letter from Isobelle Carmody recently who said she's only just started work on The Sending. I mean, she has heaps of notes, but she's now making it her primary project. A couple of other things got in the way, like a book called Alyzon Whitestarr (yet to be published) and Angel Fever (see obernewtyn.net) so the deadline got pushed back. So I think the end of next year is looking more realistic at this stage.

The problem with waiting so eagerly for a book is that you hear so many rumours about when it's going to be released. Publishers says one thing, booksellers another. And the author themself says something entirely different that sets everything on its head. While it would be lovely to have The Sending in my hot little hands by the end of this year, all the word from people who have talked to Isobelle suggests that this is a bit of a pipe dream.
Luckily, there is a plethora of wonderful books out there to distract our attention while we wait. Which brings me to ask this: what's your top book recommendation to take our minds off the wait for The Sending?

I just keep on reading The Legendsong, but I am going raving mad waiting for it!! The Prophecy of the Gems is good, and Tamora Pierce works, so does Juliet Marrilier ... my recommendation is round up all of the books you have ever read and enjoyed and read them all again!

But aren't we all going to be sad when we finally get The Sending and read our way through the last page, then the last paragraph and right up to the last word... and realise that it's all over? No more waiting, no more theories, no more speculations. All in all, I think the release of the last book is going to be a strange event, happiness mixed with sadness and nostalgia.
What will we talk about when it's all over??

Oh yes, of course. Unless it's resolved once and forever in the fifth book. Ah, but there'll always be room for a good debate, or even just a general throwing of rotten fruit to decide the matter.
