This has been some fairly big news among South Park fans over the last few days. On March 14 (Tuesday), Isaac Hayes (Chef) announced his departure from the popular Comedy Central series, which he joined in 1997. Here's the details:
QUOTE On March 14, 2006, Isaac Hayes quit South Park in saying that he didn't like how South Park was treating various religions, claiming that there was a difference between satire and intolerance. However, most believe that he is leaving due to the controversial episode Trapped in the Closet, and its treatment of Scientology, as Hayes is a member of Scientology. Series co-creator and writer Matt Stone commented in a manner that suggested that Hayes practiced a double standard regarding the treatment of religion on South Park: "[We] never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin." The fate of the Chef character is unknown at the moment, whether the show creators will replace Hayes or simply do away with the long standing character remains to be seen, and some fans believe this will be the focus of South Park's Season 10 premier, which is currently set to air on March 22.
What do you think? Isn't it just petrifying??
I know your original title was in context for the television show, Kaylan, but please try to realise that it might not have given the best impression to concerned parents/guardians or visitors to the boards. - Bunne.

This was on JJJ a couple of weeks ago.
I think he's a hypocrite. Where on earth has Isaac Hayes been the last 7-odd years?! What script has he been reading? So South-Park go a little overboard sometimes, but it's the nature of the show. Matt and Trey are fully justified in saying the only reason he's leaving is because of his personal beliefs about scientology.
Here's the hypocracy though - I'm sure we've all seen the South Park Movie at some stage. That totally took the p!ss out of a lot of christian beliefs. Did he pipe up then? No.
The thing is, did you guys see the Scientology / Tom Cruise in the closet episode? It was aired a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't any better or worse than any other south park episode. If anything, it made me wonder about the religion - their story of creation for example. They had a big banner down the bottom saying "This is what Scientologists really believe" during that part of the show. I thought for sure, it can't be. So I researched it.
If anything, that episode made people aware. Yeah, it was taking major p!ss out of the religion, but it was NO different to any other episode that's studied religions, fads, hypnotherapy, talking to dead people, aliens, etc.
Have lost all respect for Isaac Hayes as a result. If he can't laugh at himself, he should never have been on the show in the first place.
Grr...

its such a shame really but at least now we know where he stands. Hayes has every right to an opinion i suppose but then so does Trey. im glad they are paying out Scientology, ive been anticipating it and it's about time really.

It is a shame that he took it that way, and he's entitled to his beliefs. but it really riled me - he's been participating in taking the p!ss (and sometimes more) out of anything and everything for the last 7-odd years. How dare he pipe up and say they've gone too far when, as people who aren't scientoligists, we just see a regular episode? There's nothing special about it, or out of the ordinary.
Isn't the every-day person entitled to their beliefs as well? He's been participating in scorning everyone else for so long, and hopefully making people laugh at themselves. Then we find out he's above us all - when it comes down to something that HE believes in, they've gone too far. It's so incredibly stupid.

I'm kind of disappointed with Isaac Hayes for cracking it and leaving when one of the millions of insulting tidbits on the show applied to him. Though, I'm sure that I've read an article that said he has had a stroke recently, so maybe we can put it down to that...probably not though.

I agree with Min, I think he's a hypocrite. Apparently it's ok to make fun of christians, jews, mormans, muslims, blacks, whites, sht.. everybody...
but oh no! You can't be nasty about scientology! Heaven forbid!
Frankly, I think a lot of the shows have been pretty horrid, but that's the show. The one thing you can say about South Park is that there is no double standard. They rip the sh!t through everyone.
Apparentlt Mr. Hayes couldn't handle that. Hypocrite.

I really thing it is stupid. I watch South Pask almost allways when it is on and the the amount of people the make fun of is horrendous. I mean, in every episode Kyle is accused of being a stupid jew. I dont think Isaac should of gottan so angry about it when they did a show on his religion. They dritisise everybody elses.

It's upsetting that he is going but he is entitled to make his own decisions and it may seem hypocritical but maybe he really doesn't like being racist or whatever to any of that stuff and has only just recently realised it. anyway, it's just stupid to quit when he has already gone this far

I agree
How many seasons have been aired now? I can't remember! But chef is a main character and one of my favourites. If they are just going to replace the voice then that is stupid. I like chef, but i dont think there should be a chef is isaac isn't the voice. He's great at it. This all sux

I don't think they'll just replace him with another voice / same character. Knowing how the south park guys usually react to hypocrites...well, I'm imagining a firey death of some sorts. Or they'll just pretend he never existed.
Butters: Hey, where's Chef? Stan: Who? Cartman: *some sarcastic comment, pointing out how stupid Butters is*

I think one of the guys is covering Chef's voice, i think they have an episode where it's all about how there's something "odd" about Chef. We all know it's a different voice, but they pass it off as something else... i think that's what it is. But i'm willing to be proven wrong. It's another egg! Got no idea what this is? Head over here to find out more!

There are all these rumours going around that the Scientology community were heavily persuading him to quit or, to take an even more extreme postion, the scientologists quit for him. I don't really place much faith on these rumours, since it seems to be the 'cool' thing to be suspicious of the cult/faith now that Tom Cruise has such a bad rep for being bat****crazy, but it's an interesting thing to ponder. Perhaps Issac Hayes was getting some pressure and he decided that the tactful thing to do was just remove himself from the show, hypocrite or no. I do think that there must have been at least a tiny bit of fervent backlash from his faith though, it's just a question of how much it affected his decision. Meanwhile, my sources also tell me what the South Park kids are going to do with the voice for Chef: They're going to take small excerpts of words he's said before on the show and cut them together. And they're deliberately doing this to make it sound really homemade and obvious, probably because something that badly done is more funny than trying to actually replicate Hayes' own voice, which would be laughable, rather than comic. The episode in question is actually already up on the internet somewhere, but I'm pretty happy to wait for the ep.

Havnt they already aired that? Its called The Return Of Chef or something Here's a quote from Wikipedia In the episode, Chef is brainwashed by The Super Adventure Club, whose mission is to molest children all over the world. This "club" is clearly another satire of the Church of Scientology. Apparently, the club brainwashed Chef to believe that molesting children could make you immortal, which the club explains in terms similar to those which describe the origins of Scientology in the episode Trapped in the Closet. Despite a rescue attempt by the four boys, Chef succumbs to the brainwashing and returns to the club. He is then killed in a grisly accident. Gathered for his funeral, the citizens of South Park all agree that they will remember Chef as the loving, upstanding role model. Kyle eulogizes, "We shouldn't be mad at Chef for leaving us; we should be mad at that fruity little club for scrambling his brain." Still cant help poking fun at Scientology

WOW!! I can't wait, that ep will be a killer!! Thanks for the clarification Galli and Hotd! I love the stance they're taking on it - it suggests even more so that Hayes WAS under pressure from the cult religion to quit. Scientology rant: Speaking of scientology...after that episode I did some digging around into the background of the religion (mainly because I couldn't believe the info in the ep was true...) and did you know that Hubbard was quoted saying something to the effect of "writing for a penny a page is no way to make money - if you really want to strike it rich, start a religion" Later in life, he began a regression therapy clinic or something, which was supposed to help people psycologically...then a couple of years later, he signed it up as a religion, purely to get all those fantastic tax benefits. Such are the origins of scientology...I mean, we can't judge everything from what we read on the internet, and I have no experience with anyone who is or has been a scientologist, but it seems a bit sus, hey? Sorry for the digression, back to Southpark!! *checks TV guide*?!WHAT?! South park isn't on tonight?! Instead we have *groans* Song for the Socceroos!? GAH! I refuse to jump on the soccer bandwagon, especially when 1) they'll just get knocked out in the first round anyway and 2) they're airing the ridiculous SONG comp instead of Southpark!!

I definitely agree with you Min, very sus :-\ But then again, I think most religions are rather sus, they either seem to envolve a lot of guesswork or someone's just trying to cash in for a profit. Have you seen the episode about Mormons? I thought it was just a ridiculous episode at the time, but afterwards I looked it up and it seemed pretty dodgy. Pretty easy to tell I'm an athiest. Dont throw tomatoes at me EDIT: Oh my god...i just went and downloaded some of the episode where Chefs.....voice isnt quite right...and its the funniest thing ever You can download clips here
