Pfft! I've had it, im fed up! My computer is bein a pain in the neck!
For instance, I can't get into my email (hotmail), and there are some other web pages I can't get into (i.e vicbarschool, swinburne tafe, etc.)
Does ANYONE have any idea how to fix this? We have a dell comp, if that helps. We also hav AVG software....
The main annoyance (other than not bein able to read important emails) is that I cannot send in any of the artwork I've been doin (aha! the link to computer problems and why it's bein posted on an obernewtyn msg board)
If anyone has experienced this or similar can u drop me a line on how it mite be fixed? We've already sent the comp back like 3times to 'get a new hard drive'....
Cheers and Cherries, Elaria071

Ooooh! Finally I can offer some...I wouldnt really call this advice, but sympathy to someone about computers! *feels special* Elaria, I did have this exact problem a year or so ago. Not being able to get to hotmail.com and other sites (ie the National bank site). My mum downloaded Mozilla Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and since then its been fine . Someone more computer-wise correct me if Im wrong (<everyone lines up> ) but it may also have something to do with your firewall?? Sometimes Firefox just wont work either, so we turn off the firewall, load the page then turn it back on again (Im NOT suggesting you do this, its just what we do) and then it seems to be fine. Good luck, I know how irritating it is!!

What do you mean specifically by 'can't get into'? Do the pages just not load (sits there for a while and then you get a timeout error, or maybe a standard could-not-load page), are you getting access denied things, or is your browser actually crashing on you?
AVG is anti-virus software which shouldn't effect any of this. It is, however, usually bundled with either Kerio or has its own firewall. I've never touched the second one, but you know if you're running Kerio if there is a icon that looks like a blue shield in your tray next to the clock.
Oh, and I'm assuming you're running Internet Explorer.

The hotmail pages and even the MSN home page plays up regularly. A good way of checking whats working see if any of the following occur: If you can't access any websites then its likely that your internet connection is down.If you can access some websites, but not others, then its likely that one of the internets webservers is down, or your ISP is blocking some sites If its the latter, the best thing to do is try the sites on another computer. If you can access them there then you need to talk to your ISP. If you can't then you just have to be patient. On another note, i'd recommend changing your AVG virus checker to Avast. Its much better and will offer a higher level of protection (plus its also free!) Go to www.avast.com

Thanx for that! Work has mozilla firefox aswell, I kno that much...
Ok, when I say 'can't get into it' I mean exactly that.... nothing will load. It says that it is 'done' (in the bottom left hand bar) but sitting in front of me will be a white screen with no error msg, etc.
No, I have no blue shield...
I kno that it's not just the website down because it has happened way too often. I can also get into it on one of the comps at wrk (if it's logged in)
Hmm, I'll pass these ideas onto my dad, he's gone all funny with downloadin programs onto our comp now... :S
And last but not least, yes, this is Internet Explorer.
Cheers guys!

Another thing that can *sometimes* rarely cause issues with IE is your temp files. A good solid cleanup may be in order -
1. Delete temporary internet files. ~ Go to Tools menu -> Internet Options and click on "Delete Cookies", "Delete Files" and "Clear History". This will clean up your IE. 2. Run Disk Cleanup. ~ Located in Accessories -> System Tools from your start menu. In the Disk Cleanup - once the screen comes up asking which options to tick - tick EVERYTHING EXCEPT Compress old files. 3. Run a Disk Defragmentation ~ Located in Accessories -> System Tools from your start menu as well. Run the Defragmentation after you've done the disk cleanup. It may take AGES if you haven't done this regularly. Just persevere - if possible, go and do something else for half an hour, then come back and see how it's going. If the report indicates there are still fragmented files, defrag again until there's 0 fragmentation.
Good luck. None of the above will be bad for your machine, and you might find it fixes it too.

Well done Min. I'd forgotten to suggest that! I always clear compress old files, (as they take up a lot of space). i just leave the catalgoue files for Content Indexer unticked.

I don't know what the technicals behind this is, but I remember my boss saying that compressing old files makes your hard disk slower I dunno. We've got a batch running at work (and I've put it on my home comp) that runs a disk cleanup on all partitions and then defrags it as soon as you log on very noice little bit of coding my boss did. Saves having to do it all manually!!

but if you do it manualy it gives you an excuse to surf the net whilst waiting for it to finish
