i'm going to be in melbourne in the middle of January for a week and as i've never been there before i was wondering what one should see and do. (eg. places of interest, shopping, activities....)
cheers,
Maverick

Well there's several things to do if you haven't been before, there is the aquarium? the zoo? casino (pending on age ofcourse). Ummm it's even just fun to walk around the city, near flinders treet and the Shrine (which is also good to see)

The Botanical Gardens are gorgeous! I just had a lovely day there picnicking with friends... Erm, yeah, all the stuff he said! Even if you aren't over 18 the Casino is worth a visit, so pretty with its fire at night... St. Kilda beach maybe would be worth a visit. umm, will you have transport? Phillip Island is good! Penguins! yay! go here: www4.visitvictoria.com/ for more ideas!

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image is supposed to be quite good. Some of the films my dad and my grandfather shot back in the first part of the century are being shown there.

Wow really Buneater? That's very awesome, I will have to go and check it out some time! Ooh, I can make a game of trying to guess which films are most likely to be the creations of the famous bun clan.
Maverick, my recommendation for Melbourne exploration is to run around the laneways in the CBD for some fun [and aesthetically pleasing] dining and shopping. Eg. Degraves St, Centre Way, Flinders Lane, Hardware Lane. A nice Melways should be able to help you out, although exploring's always more fun when it's spontaneous! Oh and if you like art/visuals, you should check out Hosier Lane where there's some really awesome stencil graffitti. Apparently we're the world's capital for Stencil graffitti [although that pesky Buenos Aires is just itching to usurp us *glares suspiciously*]. Other than that, I suggest the NGV [National Gallery of Vic international], but then I'm going to marry the place when I'm older and laws permit unions between locations and humans, so I'm very biased.
Oh and a really great place to shop is the Fitzroy block [Brunswick St. Gertrude St. and Smith St.] although for tradition the Queen Vic Markets are nice, especially since in January they'll be having Night Markets every Wednesday evening...I think.
Urr, just realised how much I posted. Sorry for the verbosity, it's just that sharing my city makes me all excited.

It's awesome! We went there with school a couple of weeks ago. If you like computer games it's really awesome, as well as all the movies and things. Definately something you should check out if you're at Fed Square (assuming you like Moving Images...) You could go check out Chinatown for a while, that's pretty good. And Burke Street Mall is always good...

wow thanks guys! don't worry about the verbosity galli.... if it were the vegas of bris i'd do the same yeh i think i might do the whole spontaneous wandering thing (considering i can't get my license for another 2 months grrrrr so everthing's going to have to be on foot or be public transport) erm just one question, what's a melways? *shrugs and scratches head* maverick "so i said goodbye to all my friends and packed my hopes inside a matchbox 'cause i know it's time to fly"

"Melways" is what people call a popular street directory here, so much so that you often see Melway page references accompanying an address. The same company (Ausway) also does a Sydway, and more recently has a Brisway.

Yeah, Melways is good for finding specific locations. Not much in the spontaneous walking into unknown laneways though Which is a very good idea. Melbourne has plenty of them especailly near Federation Square and such surrounding areas. But all of the above suggested ideas are really good, i hope you have time for them! wow thanks guys.... now i have a faint i idea of what to do! yay! ;D i'll try to fit in what i can but i'm actually down ther for the student leadership conference at St catherines/ Melbourne girls grammar? yeah something like that. anyway we have a bit of free time coz i'm leaving early (ie. have a jetstar flight that leaves the day before it starts at 6.20 am .... so wake up at 4.30 to get to the airport by 5.20 ) so i'll try to do everything . no promises though. maybe i'll post my melbourne experiences when i get back and compare them to australia's most livable city: brisbane. but then i might be a tad biased. *ducks for cover as all melbournites simultaneously lob vegetables* teehee mav So I said goodbye to all my friends And packed my hopes inside a matchbox 'Cause I know it's time to fly

Um...why is Brisbane the worst capital city you've been to? Share your experiences too!! Since, you know, some of us live there and it's our home Personally the worst capital city I've been to is Auckland...even though technically Wellington is the capital. But I tend to find it's the people, not the place itself, that defines my opinion of it. I'm sure if I'd met with a different group of people, my opinion of Auckland would be entirely different.

Brisbane always seems to bring out the dodgy weather whenever I go there, last time I went to stay with my grandparents it was so amazingly windy for the first half of the week, and then scorching and somehow a bad kind of hot for the second *sigh*

Min i totally agree with the Auckland comment. I didn't like the place at all. It was funny, the last time i was there Wellington really got on my nerves. But Auckland when you're moving about town on foot is terrible. And would it kill them to signpost some of the streets??? SERIOUSLY

Yeah, I'm sure it's ok. But like I said before, I tend to characterise a place by the people I meet. Let's just say I NEVER want to go back there...*shudders*

The best city i've ever been to for people is Toronto. Its an amazing place, and the people are so friendly! They go out of their way to help you!
The second best is the town (city?) of Buffalo in New York State

can't really comment... only been to sydney and canberra. liked them both but i'd take canberra over sydney... more aesthetically pleasing as far as layout goes. and it's really clean.
