Oh. My. Gosh. Isobelle is one of the nicest people I could ever hope to meet!!!! But I rush ahead of myself...
I found it hard to fall asleep last night, I was so excited. I put on disc two of Cairo Jim and Jocelyn Osgood in Bedlam from Bollywood and found myself soothed by Geoffrey McSkimming's voice (as I had known I would be). I slept well after that and awoke this morning before my alarm.
I trundled off to the hairdresser's, stopping in at Target and a book shop to see if they had copies of Little Fur (they didn't), and arrived promptly at 10:30.
As it turned out, I didn't finish there until one o'clock, the time I had wanted to get to the library. I'd wanted to get a good spot and maybe check out some IC books I hadn't read yet that they don't have at our local library.
I rushed home and quickly changed into my gypsy Elaria outfit. Robyn helped me lace up the corset/bodice. She was seemingly unconcerned about the time (she told me later that she had thought it to start at three o'clock, and was wondering at my rush). Anyway thank you Robyn because without you I could not have been a gypsy.
Fate seemed to swing in my favour all day. I arrived exactly on time and met Margi. I sat down and Isobelle smiled at the group of school children seated on the floor, smiled at the adults sitting behind them, smiled and Margi and I... Her face registered surprise at my outfit and she smiled again at me!
I could hardly keep the grin off my face as Isobelle spoke. She spoke of her childhood and storytelling, playing 'The Monster Game' with her younger brothers and sisters and the origin of Little Fur. I felt I must look like one of the wide-eyed youngsters on the carpet. Some of the children glanced off into space. These were the ones who did not feel the joy of reading as Isobelle, and I, do. Others were enthralled and drawn into the stories Isobelle told. However there was not one face present who did not smile when Crow (a puppet) made a cameo appearance.
Question time rolled around and Isobelle fielded questions from students (which were mostly prompted by teachers). "Do you use metaphors?" was a question asked by one girl. IC answered this in a rather round-a-bout way but it was entertaining nevertheless.
It was inevitable that The Sending would come up. Isobelle revealed that she has actually been receiving hate mail from angry fans, boycotting her other books until such time as The Sending be released. Time seemed to speed up for that hour and when Isobelle finished speaking it seemed to have been but a heartbeat.
They were selling copies of Little Fur for $20, with which you were given a bookmark and poster. I had almost (but not quite) exhausted my bank balance at the hairdressers that morning, but I had enough left to buy a copy. I ducked out of the library quickly to the ATM and got quite a few strange looks. I guess gypsies don’t often walk through the middle of the Novatel building lol. Or the library carpark. I made it back with plenty of time to spare.
I joined the line to meet Isobelle and have my books signed. I’d brought along Obernewtyn and Darkfall from home. I overheard the people in front of me discussing Isobelle’s hate mail and jumped in with “Well, you can take as long as you like to release The Sending, because then I’ll have something to look forward to. (Which is true. I’ve decided I can wait.) Her face broke into a smile and she replied “Oh thank you”. I think I might have been the first person to say that to her.
When it was my turn, Isobelle was so pleased that I had dressed up “I love it when people dress up like this” and said I looked exactly like a gypsy and could be a character in her books. She also said that she kept looking at me while she was speaking Mission accomplished, I’d made myself memorable! I introduced myself as ‘Elaria’ and then said my real name is Emma. I also told her about this being my costume for my friend’s 21st and she said it was perfect
Isobelle signed my books:
Little Fur: To Emma, welcome to a world of hidden magic! Isobelle Carmody
Obernewtyn: To Emma, who looks like she belongs in one of my books! Isobelle Carmody
Darkfall: To Emma, may your life be filled with the Song. Isobelle Carmody
Another girl, forgive me for not remembering her name (it started with P…), had brought all her books to be signed. I should have done that. Instead I said I only brought two, but it was like trying to choose between pets. IC knew exactly what I meant and likened it to her being asked to choose her favourite book. I had my photo taken with her and Crow

I asked if Selmar is the Destroyer, to which she replied “no”. Unfortunately I didn’t get to ask any more questions. I took a photo of Margi and Isobelle and then it was time to leave… I walked back to my car in a daze (receiving still more strange looks).
I just finished reading Little Fur and can't wait for the next book!
Oh I am so happy! What an absolutely awesome day!!!!
Em
By the way, Isobelle hates the Harry Potter series...
