American Football aka Gridiron is a tactics sport. All those 'plays', names, numbers signals they callout are tactics (I found that out by playing NFL 2004 on my Xbox. It so dame adictive). Also a lot of padding and protection is involved in to the game
Rugby Union is an old english settelment game played by South Africa (Springbox), Australia (Walibies), New Zealand (All Blacks), and England (don't know there team name). League is a nation sport played by clubs within the country (aka 'Super 12' in Australia). The rules are difference for somethings between the two because of the needs of the game. (I don't know that much).
AFL is what Miska explained and is a little like Gailic Football (soccor/AFL/rugby) but with a oval field and short shorts and a singlet (while being palyed in winter) also the ball is an ovalish one. FUN ;D
