dont no. i always thought it was when they moved it to the usa. so were taking it down.

The song refers to the Great Fire of London Bridge I always thought but reading that article it says that there were several fires. I don't know which was the "Great" one. Further verses go on to say to rebuild it and stuff.

The song dates back to Roman times. The first 'London Bridge' was made of wood, and needed constant repair, hence the song.
