ok being as incompetant at computers as i am i have a problem....i no its hard gonna be hard to actually help me, but if anyone has any suggestions as to wat i can do that would be great (that is besides taking it to the doctor - which i do think ill have to do, but anyway)....ok so here it is...
Problem: my laptop wont actually recognise having a cable plugged into it so i can connect to the net. ive tried different caple and stuff so i no its not the cable or the port im using (since it works for the other computers)...this happened after i shut it down one day and it said that it was installing updates :S (no idea. i was to tired and it turned off pretty quickly after)....but yea does anyone have any suggestion/hints as to wat i can look at or try?! or maybe no wat i have done to it?! as i was silly enough to delete my antivirus protector thingy...so any suggestions wont be bad
thankx ppl

Hey miska, Not sure what's happening there, but could you give us some more info about your system? For example, what operating system and version you are running, whether you are on dialup or ADSL or cable internet, or whether you connect to local network, etc, to access the internet?

If you have Windows XP on it, you could try a system restore, which would set your computer back to how it was a few days before. Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore Follow the directions that come up (it's easy). This does not mess up your computer, and you can undo it if you want.

Miskly, it sounds like you're Network driver might not be installed, or working. Try a couple of things, and let me know:
1. Go to Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager. From here look out for any yellow question marks or red crosses. These indicate problems with hardware.
Look under Network adapters. Expand Network adapters and right click on whatever type of adapter you have, and firstly check that it's enabled (if it is enabled, the option to disable it will be available. If it's disabled, the option to enable will appear). If it's enabled, right click the same thing and select properties. Does it say that the device is working properly?
You have the added option from here to click on 'Troubleshoot'. It's a windows multiple-choice troubleshooter, and quite easy to use.
So, IF there are question marks/crosses, you need to update the driver and install the hardware. Get the CDs that came with your system - one will be for your motherboard and include things like your audio driver, and the network driver. Install it (either from the autorun on the CD, if it has one, or from the device manager network adapter properties, and 'update driver').
Let me know if this works...

If you don't have the product CD's, the other option is to go to the manufacturers website (ie Dell, Toshiba, etc) and go to the support page, and download the latest driver. Most drivers will fit on a floppy disk (if your laptop is old enough to come with a floppy drive), or burn it to a CD and install from there.
I assume this all happened after running windows update? I have had loads of trouble with windows updating drivers. It completely crashed my work comp once when it tried updating the grpahics card drivers!

Don't even get me started on Windows Update!! It crashed my computer last weekend! I didn't lose any info (I partition my drive thankfully), and I surprisingly didn't lose my profile, but I had to do a repair that took aaaaaages, and it'd blown the motherboard drivers away! grrr, Windows update...GRR!!

That's very unusual! It'd shouldn't screw those up. What type of motherboard do you have?

Intel.
It was very, veeery odd, Dark One! Since it happening I've heard of other people having the same problem. I guess that's why they always say 'back up before installing updates'...because there's always a chance...
And Miska did you get your laptop running? Did you wind up reformatting in the end?

I tend to ignore the hardware updates on windows update now. If it shows something there, then i tend to go to the manufacturers site

Tis best not to touch the driver updates at all. (unless you know for certain that they work). Get all the required updates from the computer manufacturer.
If you were local to me, i'd say i'd sort the laptop out for you

if you've got the original restore disks, then it should be easy. All you do is boot from them and follow the onscreen instructions
