native american people have prophercies about the end of our civilization now wherther these are true or not you can judge but still what if we already ahve done so much damage to the earth we are allready too late eg : iceburgs breaking away from anartica australia the worst drought in 1000 years! if you really want to see the rest then head to www.earthchangestv.com it'll open your eyes to the state our planet has gotten to! in the oc isn't there just a bit more than just a slight resemblance to the beforetimers to us? I am only posing this question because it could be a real thing not just a fantasy idea what do you belive??? and if you do what do you think can/should be done??? -steph aka falconfaseeker

I don't know if you've noticed but IC has those underlying themes in a lot of her work. In the Legendsong series she has the whole 'chaos spirit' thing and in the OC. It's kind of like she's trying to make us think about our world by connecting the dots.
I believe that - I don't want to be the generation who turned our backs on a very real and very bad situation - I don't want to be the generation that let the fear of terror stop us from living and loving. - I want to be the generation who stands up and says "now hold on just a minute..." and "now this is what needs to happen"
I think Johnny Howard should send out an official document to everyone in Aus, outlining the problem of global warming, and what needs to be done to stop it. I also think we should sign the kyoto protocol.
I may come back here, to talk more about it all, but I'm seriously behind in my a$signments! cool topic tho!!

IC has such strong themes - one of the biggest - for me - is corruption and the effects of it. the other is tolerance, both important themes for the world we live in today (and the past)
i'm not sure if she is modelling the BFT on us as we are now, or us as we may become in the not-too-distant future...
the idea of nuclear war scares the hell out of me - it would definately be the war to end all wars, for a time at least. there is a message of hope in the OC, but it is only fiction after all.
my dad has this saying - the fourth world war will be fought with sticks and stones.
scary thought.

If the translation i read is correct..Nostrodamus (sp) predicted a nuclear war between China and the Western world. I cant recall the date. So i do not doubt that a nuclear holocaust is possible.
When you think about what the BOT machiene was built to do in the OC's befortime, you see a similar situation in our world where the BOT could be considered usefull.
As morbid as it sounds, I dont think the human race will last much longer, especailly not in our current state/direction. The dinosaurs dominated the earth before humans, and something else will dominate after us.

The dinosaurs dominated the earth before humans, and something else will dominate after us. i'm not sure we dominate now - we certainly try to control as much as we can. Nature dominates. Nature controls. no matter what we do we cannot control or shape her to our will. how often have we seen a man-made structure come crashing down in an earthquake? a city destroyed by a volcano? a flood? tidal wave? Nature decimates, takes what she wants. that's why i respect her. we, as humans, will never have that level of power over our environment. but i am with you - i don't think we will be here forever. the earth will destroy us before the end of everything - before we destroy her, i think. she will recover from the damage we are doing/have caused, but in her own time. she won;t be able to sustain us forever, hence, we will become extinct. it may takes hundreds of years, but our cities, our glory, our technology etc will fall into nothing. i'm not much of a humanist i sometimes think we are the worst thing that could have happened to the world. not always, but sometimes.

I should clarify, that when i said we dominate, i meant it in terms of being the most prevalent and wide spread species.
There are days when I'm not so worried about the world (in terms of people) because i know that we all die at some point. I also have my days, like you MK, where i think we are the worst thing in the world. It saddens me to think that, for the world to get rid of us, it must go through significants upheavals that will affect the animals as well.

I don't believe that. I still think there is a chance this world could get better. We just have to gain control.

The idea of a nuclear holocoust such as the "great white" is actually quite feasable- there is enough nuclear weaponary in existance to completley blow up the planet SIX times. Not to mention the nuclear power stations thought the USA, Russia and other countries- (for an examle of what nuclear materials can do look at photos of Nagasaki, hiroshima and the site of the Chenobyl disaster)
So a large enough nuclear disaster to destroy 95% of the planet and there still being weapons left over works for me.
BTW the Bible (esp the books of Daniel and Revalation) has some pretty spectacular end-of-the-world total-destruction-and-anhiallation prophecies
and an angel who has the power to "destroy the earth with fire" as translated in some versions

It is very unusual for a nuclear powerstation to go into meltdown as they have many levels of safeguards that have to be removed before the system can go critical. The problem with Chernobyl was that the Russians (due to costs) didn't have many safeguards in place before meltdown occured.

thing is we dont need the powerstations to meltdown in order to destroy the planet... theres enough nuclear weaponry to do that already....
but how hard would someone have to try if they deliberatley wanted to cause a powerstation to meltdown? i dont think it would take more than one heavy bomber...

The problem with Chernobyl was that the Russians (due to costs) didn't have many safeguards in place before meltdown occured. it was such a mess - guys picking up radioactive bits and pieces with their bare hands, no safety gear, threats made on their families lives if they didn't do what they were told...and then there's the effect it had/is having on the population... gotta love the russians - we can send a man into space but we cannot have proper safety precautions on our nuclear material... but the weapons thing is scary - i think the only thing that freaks me out more than the possibility of nuclear war is biological war....

Most modern nuclear powerstations are built from reinforced concrete. When a nuclear bomb is dropped, reinforced concrete structures are one of the few things not destroyed. All the plant operators have to do to stop meltdown is remove the nuclear fuel rods. All plants have backup power for emergencies, so it's very doubtful that such an event could occur

you wouldnt drop a nuclear bomb on one, just a regular, blow up and smoosh stuff bomb take a look at the photos of Afghanistan and Iraq once the US was finished with them- Reenforced concrete or not, its not going to survive a direct hit

I have a feeling that Australia is going to suffer sometime in the future. Our countries are slowly being pushed together, but I don't think that'll save Australia, becuase there's a big hole in the ozone layer in Antarctica whick is getting bigger, and our greenhouse gasses are getting worse. So I have a feeling that Australians (in the very distant future) would either drown in seawater, or fry (or have a serious skin cancer problem) because of the hole in the ozone layer.
Dark One, feel lucky.

That's obviously going to happen no matter what we try to do to save teh planet. Our polar ice caps will melt and flood, yet the overwhelming vasity of the size in the ozone layer is just a bomb ticking away. What can we do to stop it? Nothing. We are doomed. 2012
