So, come on Victorian students, what'd you get?! Did anyone here do year 12?
I did year 11 with one year 12 subject, Geography, and got a study score of 42!!!
(That's out of a possible 50, and has been scaled down) All of my GA thingies, whatever they are, were A+s!! I'm so happy!!!!!!!
Ahem, anyway. How'd everyone else go?

congrats Cat! Thats awesome!
ahh you poor little HSC people! i did mine so long ago it is but a distant memory...
i do remember my results though - they were sh!t-house! by the time exams came i didn't care. i had already gotten into uni on principals recommendation, so it really didn't matter to me anymore. i did okay in a few subjects - english (2U and 3U) and modern history and biology.

wow... ur smart schis... lol
i got all band 5s for my subects (art, ipt, italian, maths general, 2 unit religion) except for english which was a 4... still good as far as im concerned
Lucy: the marks we get are put into performance bands. So no attempt is a band 1... all the way up to a band six which encompasses marks from about 90 - 100... however if no one gets in that range the bands get moved around to make sure there are band 6's. well... theres my understadning of it... correct me if im wrong someone

Now its just a wait for UAI tomorrow..hopefully around a 95

Ah, ok. Thankies for the explanation. Sounds like the way they do it here, apart from letter grades instead of bands. What do HSC and VCE stand for? (just to be buggy!)

The Victorian one works differently to the NSW one (HSC). In Victoria you get scores out of 50 for each subject, not 100. And we don't have bands... But 40 and above is excellent, 35-40 is very good, 30-35 is good, 25 is average, that sort of thing. People with scores above 40 in each subject are in the paper (yay! I was in the paper ) Then they work out your ENTER, which, for Victoria, is a ranking of how well you did against the rest of the state. The universities then say 'To do this course, you need an ENTER of ...' and everyone tries to get into the course they wanted. Everywhere in Aus they do the universities saying 'You need this <insert name of score or ranking or whatever here> to do this course' but the states work out their scores differently. In Victoria they take English and your top 3 other scores and add them together, and then take 10% of your next best two (most people will only have one more subject, but if you did a subject in year 11 you'll have two) and add them in too. Then they do weird stuff and get it to a score out of 99.95 (that's the highest score you can get, it means you did better or equal to 99.95% of the students completing VCE that year in the state). No idea how they work it out in NSW And the QLD one has 1 as the highest and 25 as the lowest score, so it's always really hard comparing scores across the country

Yeah, it was fairly difficult, seeing as we did one of the harder electives, postmodernism... i was a bit annoyed with that mark as well, as for my exam mark i got 43, for my a$sessment mark i got 37 and then got 40 overall...so i could have done better...but the exam really suited me. x Edit- Got my UAI... 95.20...which is better than i expected...im so happy...and that should get me into combined law at newcastle...

Well done to the VCE / HSC grads! Can I just say, though, that the VCE grading system seems ridiculously over-complicated, with the marking up and down stuff. It would be nicer if we had a system which didn't reward or penalise people for taking certain courses, etc., but encouraged students to take the subjects they genuinely enjoyed.

I hope I go even half as well as you guys next year! Yeh, i didnt expect to get as high a band 5 for ext 2 maths....i was thinking more like a 75, which would still be an E3... And it should be noted that there is no way i got 80 as a raw mark...it would be scaled...that most likely would have been about 50-55%, maybe a bit more...edit, just realised i wrote band 5 for ext 1 and 2 maths...technically its an E3, which is the equivalent of a band 5 in an extension subject...doesnt really matter... What subjects are u doing, Arien???

My cousin (or second cousin or something, I don't really know) did VCE this year, and guess what he got for his ENTER?
99.95 ... That's no joke!

Cat, with regards to the weird stuff they do to get your ENTER, it's just looking at the overall scores students have received and ranking it from highest to lowest. Then they take the people with the 20 (approximately, this number fluctuates depending on the scores and how many people tie for the same score) highest scores and allocate them a 99.95, the next highest 20 are given 99.90, the next highest 99.85 etcetc. I agree with AF about the mark-up mark-down thing, I don't see why someone should be 'punished' for doing well in a course just because the other people in that subject might not do as well in their other subjects. In my year (2004) even if you got 50 in all your subjects, if they weren't marked up at all and you receieved an aggregate of 210 (that's 4x50 + .1(50+50)), you'd still only get 99.90. Ridiculous, really.
But anyway, my rant on the effectiveness of the system shouldn't deter anyone from feeling proud about their results. Cat and Schis, congratulations on being rewarded for your hard work! Here's hoping next year will go as smoothly for you Cat. And Unykorn, that's really great news about your cousin/second cousin!
