I thought chocolate was disallowed! My real comfort food, when I'm feeling really down is brown rice. Thats really intersting Kangarath, because I've read that rice has anti depressant properties. So it really is a comfort food when we are down. Min- Are you sure you are meant to be cutting down on ALL carbs? Or just high GI ones? My PCOS Doc said to eat low GI carbs =) Which I am sooooo glad about because I could never give up carbs!

Basically he said to get a higher protien diet with less carbs - though I can eat potatos still the rule was basically only one type of pasta, one type of rice, and one type of bread, all that are high in protein and low in carbs... What foods have low GI carbs? Because I'm still struggling to find stuff I can eat without feeling guilty...

*stops naming food with chocolate as one of the ingredients* Peoples! This is a thread to talk about your comfort foods! Not low/high GI carbs! *continues naming foods with chocolate as one of the ingredients*

Min- Check out this site: www.glycemicindex.com/ It actually says that low GI foods help control the effects of PCOS. And because they do this in a variety of ways, you can see if it suits your symptoms. Like, they help control insulin release, which can be useful if that is an issue, and my doc told me that high GI foods also do something that releases higher levels of testosterone (if body hair is a problem) and so low GI foods are better to control that aspect. Also, have a look around your local bookshop. They have a book on PCOS and how a low GI diet can help control it. BUT your doc might have a completely different reason for telling you to eat what you are eating so yeah, maybe talk to him about it first. And Marumanyelloweyes, the low/high GI discussion is because carbohydrate rich foods are things we often crave as comfort foods ^_^ Sugar is a carb! And if you are going to crave something as a comfort food, you might as well eat the good version rather than the bad version.

choc is the universal comfort food! thats why i said no choc is to be mentioned...maybe i should have said no choc derivative foods aswell the reason i started this thread was so ppl could share what makes them feel good when they are down. food is such a huge part of our lives, and with so many different varieties of food available, some ppl have some really strange combinations of foods that make them feel good or remind them of their family etc. for instance, i love grated cheese with tomato sauce poured all over it! it sounds gross, but its amazing! its something my bro and i used to do when we were little. my other comfort food is BBQ shapes - so not good for me, but so tasty! esp when they are covered with flavour and yumminess! hmmmm i also love a big bowl of plain cous-cous. its so light and tasty! Min - i love low GI foods! you feel so good from eating them. your energy lasts longer and you don;t get that 'sugar' high and then the low that makes you feel terrible and tired and irratable. i eat rice pasta and brown rice. both of these are great. i had no idea brown rice was an anti-dpressant! thats great, casuse i eat heaps of it!

choc is the universal comfort food! thats why i said no choc is to be mentioned...maybe i should have said no choc derivative foods aswell well, choc isnt one of my comfort foods so maybe i'm an exception. or maybe i just need to find higher quality choc. the other day i about 4 oz of choc chips. they were in a bag and they had white ones (20% cocoa butter min., 20% milk solids min.) and milk choc ones (30% cocoa solids min.). they were so yummy. i might start buying them. i love jelly tots. they have way more fruit juic in them than most jellies do and they taste really nice. and they are vegetarian.

I can't decide on just one because my choice depends on what is in the cupboard/fridge at the time. Probably my choices would be Pasta, marshmellow (home made) and pancakes. Its not a food but at uni i got hooked on cappuchino's at the local cafe, best de-stress after a long anatomy lecture! (Good for waking up tired brains too) *Salivates at thought of coffee*

lol heh a lot like me.
you make home made marshmallow. how?? i need to know. i love pancakes but havent had any in years. i used to be vegan and usually dont eat eggs nowadays. if there's a little egg in something i might eat it but i usually dont. you can make pancakes with arrowroot instead of eggs but its fairly tricky. i might buy some and try making them. to make good panckaes tou need hot oil. i love good coffee.

Coffee is my number one comfort food. But i also love a slow cooked roast. Or a hearty casserole - anything that's been cooking a long time and made with love, really. There is something really heartwarming about that. Cheese and crackers works for me too. I like meals you can share - we have an "open home" policy: we have a spare bed always made up and our friends and/or brothers will often turn up and crash, so we tend to have lots of meals you can "stretch" to feed and extra person, just in case!

My friends and I have a similar policy - instead of all going home to cook ourselves dinner, we just go to whoever happens to have food in, and bring stuff to stretch the meal for however many people want it. It makes for some interesting meals (last night was pasta with pesto, aubergines, salami and parmesan cheese. Strange but tasty!)
I think there's a lot to be said for the comfort of sharing food, as well as the eating of it!

I think there's a lot to be said for the comfort of sharing food, as well as the eating of it! Here, here. Well said! I use to eat olives for comfort. I think it started out that way because I had nothing else in the fridge. Now its just coffe (though thats not a food is it)

that 'sugar' high and then the low that makes you feel terrible and tired and irratable What low? I go on almost daily highs, but I seldom get lows. If ever. Mind you, I suspect a large number are entirely natural, which therefore renders them irrelevant... Angina, rock on with those most delicious comfort foods... ;D

jelly beans are my weakness at the moment, although i have stopped eating the allens ones and am eating the glucose + ones from the chemist - i think diabetics can eat them, so i believe they are better in regards to your blood sugar...dunno.
i love custard!!! mmmmmmmm custard! my boyf hates it, so we doin;t have it alot - i can never eat a heap of it, so it sits in the fridge and goes off.
creme caramel...OMG how yummy! i need to make some more soon.
Ariadne - please please share your recipe for mashmellows! i love marshmellows but have found that the ones form the shop are getting weird - i think they may have changed the recipe or something, cuase they do not taste as good as they used to.
