- The medical name for fear of the number 666 is "hexalosioihexekontahexaphobia". Could be handy for scrabble...
- In 2005, a papyrus fragment was discovered that showed that the number of the Beast is actually 616, not 666. 666 remains the more popular number, however.
- Revelation 13:16-17 states that a time will come when everyone will receive a mark, on either their right hands or their foreheads, without which they will be unable to buy or sell. The mark corresponds to the number of the Beast. Some believe that this may refer to a microchip implanted into the skin, such as the American VeriChip.
- Another theory is that you can find the "mark" in European and American bar codes, which supposedly have all three sixes programmed into them.
- Revelation 13:18 continues by saying that the number of the Beast corresponds to a man's name. Numerologists have come up with arguments that 666 can correspond to various names, including those of Adolf Hitler (inevitably) and Ronald Regan. Most recently it's been claimed that the Antichrist is George Walker Bush Jr, as the three parts of his name each contain six letters. Now that's believable...
- Another popular theory is that the number of the Beast actually refers to infamous Christian-persecutor Emperor Nero. This theory perhaps makes the most sense since it relies on interpreting Nero's name in Hebrew, and Hebrew lettering is based on numerical values. Because Nero's name can be spelled two different ways in Hebrew, this also covers the theory that the number of the Beast is 616. Which is handy...

Are there multipal references to 'the number of the beast' in different texts? Do you know anthing about it being mentioned in nostradamus's quatrains? Is 'the number of the beast' mentioned lots of times in different places in revelations? Where did ppl come up with number 666? why do the say that 'the number of the beast' is 666? why 666? and why 616 in the papyrus fragment?

I know about this story...both of my grandparental sides were religious, but really...? This just sounds like a fear of change, yet again. Why would buying/selling and making yourself able to do both be the work of the devil? It's like a luddite mentality... My cousins are scared half to death of anything new, as it goes against their religious beliefs. Not having a go...just expressing exasperation. That was a very interesting read, DO

Or, like me, check a bible.
Hmm, you need alll of Rev. 13 for the proper thing, Rev. 13 18 merely says 'There is a need for shrewdness here: anyone clever may interpret the number of the beast: it is the number of a human being, the number 666'
Still, that supports the Bush theory. Although counting Bush and Jr. as one part is a bit sus to me, as much as I'm anti-bush. It's two words, AND ones an abbreviation! Junior, not Jr......Junior.....six letters.....but Bush still only has four, so that takes away from the overall effect.

Yeah, so that means it can't be Bush. Unfortunatly. Still, while we're talking stuff like this, my knee sweeled up to become un-usable on the sixth for no reason. Just thought I'd mention it.
