Desert Island Discs is one of the BBCs longest-running radio shows ; in it, a celebrity is interviewed about her/his life, with the occasional insert of asking them which eight (8) discs they would take with them to a deserted island. So, which 8 would you take? The RULES are: * No live CDs * No best ofs or other complications - STUDIO ALBUMS ONLY! * You may have multiple CDs from the same artist, if you like. A couple of years ago, one of my English professors at uni gave a fun lecture on her Desert Island Books. Her rules were: * No "complete collections" unless there is a very good reason (I have an exception I'll outline in a minute) * No "selected works" or "selected poems" - must be actual booklets of poetry * Plays qualify as books as well. So do short story collections. So, without further ado, my 8 DISCS are: Joy Division - Closer (1980) Pet Shop Boys - Introspective (1988) The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (1989) New Order - Technique (1989) The Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream (1993) Coldplay - Parachutes (2000) The Gathering - Souvenirs (2003) Fat Freddy's Drop - Based on a True Story (2005) Note that I may return here in a few weeks to change this list! As for my 8 books, I'll have to post them later ... I still can't decide upon a few places. The fact is that studying English lit for four years made me into a horrible literary snob. There are just some books I won't read anymore, and I feel uncomfortable going into the YA section of the library to find IC's works ... So to all you aspiring English students out there - don't become a literary snob like me! The exception the collected works I mentioned earlier has to do with a writer dying before they could publish a collection of poems, essays, short stories, etc. One example is Edward Thomas - he was killed in WWI before he could get around to organising his poems for publication, so the only book we have is his collected poems.

Only 8! *wails* Music I can live without so maybe I can cheat a little and take 16 books eh? Then I can indulge my inner literary snob as well as the populist lover of the mass paperback I'll have to think a little on this

Oh yeah, take your time, definitely. It took me quite a while to come up with this list: only three of my list were there originally. I'm still struggling with the books because I'm not sure whether I'll get killed for not taking any IC! (Just kidding )

No. You can't. Sorry to be the grinch here. Harry Potter is 6 books, Tomorrow is 7, OC is 4. His Dark Materials, if I recall correctly, is supposed to be one books (like Lord of the Rings), so that's okay.

This is too hard! I won't pick CDs because I'm from a Korean background and I'll definately take some Korean CDs with me, and you guys won't know which CDs I'm talking about. I'll do the books though!
1) Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen 2) The Lion, the Witch & The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis 3) The Bible (English Standard Version) 4) The Crucible by Arthur Miller 5) The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay 6) The Glass Lake by Maeve Binchy 7) The Sending (if it's out by then!) by Isobelle Carmody 8) The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
What a hard list it was! I had to choose just one book from series (my favourites) from Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia and Obernewtyn. How horrible! And I didn't get to include Jane Eyre, Memoirs of a Geisha, my other favourite books. What a shame. This is just too hard.

I'm actually not much of a reader...yes, I know, shame on me for being a member here and not reading much, so the books probably isn't tough for me.
But CDS *dies*. I'll make a list later.

Yes, that is a good point. If I ended up on a desert island, I'd be more likely to have my MP3 player Plus, where would the CD player and electricity/batteries come from?

Plus, where would the CD player and electricity/batteries come from? That thought actually corssed my mind... And another question, do double Cd's count as one CD or not eg Hypothetically if i wanted to take In Your Honor by the Foo Fighters would it be two discs- it is a double cd with one quiet one loud or something and thought if the quiet one came as a bonus (even though I only really listen to the loud one...)??

My uncle told me "if anyone ever asks you what would you take to a deserted island always tell them 'Solitare'. why? -whenever you play solitare some stickhead always comes up behind you and says put the ten on the jack."
the moral of the story: i hate people who DO that!!!!! (or you wont be deserted anymore, or something)

Yeah Siryn but if you don't get off the island, you might have to resort to cannibalism, which would solve your solitaire pain.
...yup, moral black hole right here folks.
Anyway, shall return with list. Am completely flumoxed by choices, they're all screaming 'pick me!' and they're all so good.

Did I mention the solar-powered generator that generates just enough energy for a CD player? Knew I forgot something! A double-album counts as one album because you don't buy the two CDs separately, so In Your Honor would still leave you with seven choices.

But then that would also apply to series'.
For example, you can buy a box set of the Harry Potter series. That way you're not buying the cd's individualy

ok, this was hard. going along with the rule that were allowed to have box sets........ ........***this is my list: Books: 1. Ober 1,2,3 complete & unbridged 2. TKP 3. The Sending-(by the time im deserted i will have bought this) 4. LOTR Obvious Choises.
CD's: 5. The Beatles Multiselection Box Set. (this has 13 discs in it BUT in my defense it's your rule not mine) 6. Once More With Feeling. (so i can re-live those Buffy/Spuffy moments) 7. David Bowie: Sound + Vision 4 CD Box Set (who wouldn't wanna have it) 8. Phantom of the Opera (something different)
***note list is subject to change

No I don't think box sets count Dark One, because no matter how they're packaged, the Harry Potter books will still fall apart to 7 separate books. With a double CD like Smashing Pumpkins' Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, while the CD discs are separate, they are only packaged in one standard CD case.
Also, and this is the more important point, the CD was made to be double disc. A boxed set implies that the record company just decided to put the CDs all together in order to make more money. So something like Push Barman to Open Wounds by Belle and Sebastian wouldn't count, because it's just a re-released collection of all their EPs on two discs. Jeepster Records did it because it's easier to release a complete collection than to distribute them in their original EP form, which would mean 8 separately packaged CDs

Killing Heidi - Reflector

Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters
aand... The Cranberries - Stars (new favourite!)

Hey Siryn, I think you can have 8 books and 8 CDs if that helps! ;D So you don't have to narrow your list down as much. Choosing only 4 books? *shudders* I couldn't do it.
