A friend of mine jsut did a assignment in which she had to destroy sydney with a cyclone!!! woohoo!!! now before we get all excited. she forgot to name it. After reminding her that ALL CYCLONES ARE FEMALE!!!! and there for have to have a female name, we came up with: Kickassa Fredrika Gertrude Janet Maria then she went off on some tangent about how she was going to call it Julia even tho there is no J in the roman alphabet..... what has roman letters got to do with a cyclone destroying sydney? ? Thats when i found out that they name after the roman alphabet and when they run out of letters there they go to greek.... and there are set lists for each year...... Hands up who thought they jsut went thru the alphabet??? looks like the only silly sausage doesnt it?? anywho just wanted to share this useless piece of information with u all, and anything else to do with naming a cyclone and stuff put it here cos im curious!!! i found the lists!!!! woohoo www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtmllooks like the dont go roman and greek anymores.....

They're not all female... I'm sure we had a Michael or something recently... Well, not that recently... But it was male! I'm sure i remember a male one! Now I'm going to go find out!

*30 seconds later* See, go to that site, there is Bret and Dennis and all kinds of things! Not all female! It used to be all female, but now they alternate. And also now they use the same lists on a cycle so 2004's list is now 2010s...
Cat
Oh! And if you scroll down there's a list of the Australian names and since you want Sydney look at the East Australian ones. And cause these ones are just sequential, not yearly, she could just pick on she likes.
Cat... again

Go for Gertrude, thats my puppys name and if you ever see my back-yard (a certain someone keeps leaving toilet paper in puppy reach) you'll think it's been hit by a cyclone
Also why the hell, just because it spins in a different direction, do we have to call southern hemisphere big storms cyclones and norther hemisphere one hurricanes? I mean as far as I can tell thay are the same thing reguardless of which way it spins

I'd read somewhere that Aussie hurricanes were called Windy Willies...

Windy willies, or whatever, is what we used to call the mini dust spirals caused by the wind and total lack of grass at my primary school.

Windy willies, or whatever, is what we used to call the mini dust spirals caused by the wind and total lack of grass at my primary school. at school we called them willie willies and I can't be bothered looking it up to see if it's true but I remember being told that cyclones were originally named after members of th opposition in government- and then they complained so then the cyclones were named after the oppositions wives , which was why cyclones were predominately given female names

Um, I think they name cyclones by going through each letter of the alphabet, and alternating gender. So it's like nikki, oscar, penny whatever...

except if they don't hit in which case there could be 100 cyclones that don't do anythg bfore tey even get near town, would sound cool though
and yes they have like tornadoes over the sea. Apperently in Australia tornadoes are called willie willies reguardless of size some bull about th direction its spinning *see my gripe 3rd post on this page*
