Innle started a poll entitled "Favourite Carmody Book".
I thought it'd be interesting to see what everyone's least favourite one was - and why...

Billy Thunder and the Night Gate. Completely put me off reading Obernewtyn for ages cause I hated it so much.

I found Angel Fever to be less than wonderful. This is probably because it was written to be part of the Quentaris series. The main problem (as I saw it) was uncertainty as to whose story it actually was. I think Isobelle works best when she focuses the story on one main character, rather than splitting it up over many (although the Legendsong books are an exception here). She seems to have a talent for exploring other characters through one main character and I think she should have stuck to doing that with Angel Fever. It just didn't work for me.
Although, I have to admit, I'm not that fond of Greylands either.
But the rest I really like! ;D

You don't like Greylands!!!
Buneater: *strokes goatee* Not really...

I love Greylands.
I dunno. Maybe you have to identify with it to love it.

Well, I was going to add that I've only read it once and I often end up changing my mind completely about books when I read them a second time. So I might give Greylands another shot one day. I bought it at the same time as Darkfall, so perhaps I was unfavourably comparing the two.

I like all Carmody on different levels but the one I get the least enjoyment out of is The Gathering...maybe it's just because the main character is male I have trouble identifying with Nathaniel. And wasn't there something horrible that happened to a dog? It has been a long time since I read it...her other books seem more emotionally challenging. Gathering had more action, but less...I dunno, character? You didn't like Greylands Buneater? I liked it, though I could see that it was for a younger audience than her (then published) other works. I think Kayt's hit the nail on the head that maybe we need to identify with books to enjoy them. Gathering was about a bad school and people being part of this community-wide horrible society...and well...I didn't love school, but I didn't think it was evil. And it seemed less believable than something written entirely in a fantasy-land...does any of this make sense? Billy Thunder seems more realistic, because the characters seem real... I'm not explaining myself very well

I think you explained yourself well Books that we can relate to get different reactions to books set in a totally fantasy world...

I agree with Min totally that different books are liked at different levels. Ober, for example, is more about characters that setting (to me), whilst Legendsong doesn't have as well loved characters. I can't pick one I disliked though!!! I loved Greylands too Kayt!!! I just loved how the entire book was like a metaphor in a way, and how she combined fantasy with reality, all the time keeping things one the borderline. ;D

I can see why you wouldn't like Greylands, especially because there's that sense of monotony. But I loved it for that same reason. Because that monotonous feeling is what it's LIKE. I really identify with that feeling.
I don't like the Gathering that much either. Just didn't identify much, same as Min.
