Ok, some movies to check out if you want to see what she's like. - Knight's Tale (not the main chic - she's Kate the Farrier) - Titus (if you're over 18, it's awfully sad ) - Small Faces (this was one of her first films, drama set in Glasgow) - 16 years of Alcohol Titus is also the film that convinced me Johnathan Rhys Meyers should play Ariel...

Miska, I have to warn you against it though. It's possibly shakespeares worst ever play. There are a lot of really good actors in it, but it's a little bit bizarre. The good guys have lots of bad stuff happen to them (Laura's character Lavinia has perhaps the worst happen to her). It's awful and it'll leave you feeling sick - I only saw it because I like shakespeare...it was scary!!!

Ok, I don't know if there's another thread that this should be put in instead, but something that I think might be as hard to do as choosing who should be Elf would be to show the "mind" stuff. Like, how do you show someone coercing someone else, or what the mindstream looks like or what farseeking to someone is like? Is it just me who thinks that would awkward and also be a big spoiler in the movie...or am I just dumb?

The thing about Farskeeing and Coercing is that they're NOT visible. Elf walks down the street coercing people, and she's totally inconspicuous. The Talents would have to be shown simply through visuals.

But...how would people know what was going on? Ok...for example, in Farseekers when Elf and Jik are in the Herder Cloisters and she wants the herder to not notice them so makes him look the other way/not notice them, if in the film the guy just walked down the corrider and didn't see them, people who didn't know the books wouldn't know what had just happened. I just think a whole element of it would be lost. But I'll just shush

No, they have to show the coercion through some other way. You can't show it in Elf's face.
What's the point in being a Talent if everytime you use your talent, a big flashing sign lights up saying "I AM A MISFIT!!!"
Wouldn't work!

they could zoom in on the herders brain and show a colored probe of something fiddling with his neurons, like they fly down ppls throats in smoking adds. And then for elspeth they could show a faint glimmer of wateva colour they used to show shes doing it....i wonder how good that would look though...might be a bit dogy...

hmm...that brain thing is kinda odd... but its a good idea about the faint glimmer of colour...we could focus on elspeth, and see a thin stream of shimmery colour come from her and ttouch someone else or something...and that way we'd know she's probing them or something. and if she talking to them, we would hear their voices as a voiceover. good thinking!

You could possibly show coercion aurally, too. Essentially, coercion involves the coercer ordering a person's brain to think in a particular way, so it should be possible to use voices to indicate coercion is taking place. For instance, with the example of the Herder, the camera could switch to a perspective that gives us the impression we're sitting on the Herder's shoulder. Then, at a very low level, you could hear Elf's voice muttering or whispering rapidly, her words almost indecipherable at first. Eventually, we would able to hear enough to realise she's telling the Herder to look the other way, nothing to see here...
Just a thought.
Now that I know who Laura Fraser is, I find I'm not hating the idea of her playing Elf. She impressed me as a very strong, fiery sort of person in A Knight's Tale and that seems perfect for our Elspeth.
