i need a movie (to show at uni) that has an older person die and high levels of grief. I am having a mind blank and the best my friend can think of is Beaches, but i don't think she is old enough.
Older in this case being over 50.
i would appreciate any responses. Elondriel

Eeek.. it's surprising how tought it is to think of movies that fit those criteria... So far all I can think of is Forrest Gump, The Hours and Stepmom, but I don't know if the people are old enough, or if they're really the type of movies yer after

Hmmmmm.... hard... All I can think of is Titanic, but she only dies at the end and no grief is shown cause it just goes back to her being on the ship...
I'll see if I can think of any more *thumbs up*

lots of people die in legends of the fall, but I can't remember if Anthony Hopkins' character (i.e. the oldest character in the whole damn movie) actually dies at the end.... I cant remember the ends of movies anymore! What's wrong with me? That's usually the only bit I remember....

what about Dantes Peak? when the old lady saves her family by jumping into the acid water and pulling her boat to shore? lol, thanks for the suggestion, but i don't think i could use that for a natural death, i think that would be a little bit too sensationalised. New question, just in case i don't find a suitable movie with an old person dying, although i do seriously like your suggestions thus far...
if i decide to take a tangent and concentrate on grief, or decide to show two clips of film..., what would be the saddest grief scene, for example, i think all the death scenes in Romeo and Julliet are heaps sad.
Anything else?

Romeo and Juliet made me cry!!!
Who'm I kiddin', I always cry!!!
Um... I always get uber sad when Boromir dies in LotR, but that's probably not quite right!!! I'll have a think!

little women... nice choice, i'll add that to the possibles.
Can't do lion king for two reasons: 1) it has to be a human death
2) i'll never watch it again, too sad!

Blah spolier warning for anyone who hasnt seen Forrest Gump. And a brief warning about this whole thread which could potentially contain spoilers to lots of movies, blah. That'll do.. Forrest Gump again! Particularly when Forrest goes to visit Jenny's grave..

Hey Elondriel, Try Radiance, an Aussie play (by Louis Nowra?), turned into a film. From memory, I believe it deals with 3 sisters getting together to deal with the death of their older mother? Don't quote me, it's been a while. Or for a NZ Film, Once Were Warriors. A particular grief scene I can think of that's probably too odd (in that it's not a human death) is when Wilson 'dies' in Castaway. I was up there bawling with Tom Hanks, I hate to admit. And personally, I hate hate hate the death in Moulin Rouge of Satine. You know it's going to happen the entire movie, but it's still heart-wrenching...*sobs and hugs Ewan* it's ok Ewan!!!!!! Wait, more Ewan-ness - what about the death in Big Fish? It's different, in that it's not sad - it's like a celebration of his life...it's a very different way of dealing with it... ...now I'm just getting off topic

What about Four Weddings and a Funeral - the guy in that must be 50 plus and it's so sad when John Hannah reads the poem *sniff*
I don't really do sad films cos I cry, and that's never good.
Goodbye Mr Chips is said at the end.

Big Fish is a good one, but maybe not so griefy.
But Four Weddings and a Funeral is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I wholeheartedly support the idea. I suggest, nay I DEMAND you use Lucy's suggestion!
*gives Lucy a thumbs up*
