well i live about 5 mins away from Yvette - and Buneater, if you live in Vermont South then that means your only about 5 mins away from me as well - I live in mitcham near the rangeview shops off Mitchm rd it really is a small world isn't it?!?! I think a small Australia, rather. It goes to show that it's primarily Aussies who read IC.

Well, if Emerald lives in Mitcham than I live 10mins away. I drive down Mitcham road all the time, and have a huge assosciation with Whitefriars college, both goegraphically and educationally.
And so I guess that makes me pretty close to Yvette and Buneater too...

It sounds like it!
Just to ruin everything, I'll be moving to the Doncaster area soon, so I'll no longer be near all of those people.

Nope, Doncaster is still pretty close. I mean, it's not next door, but that still rates as close on my 'where people live' scale. Also on the 'where parents are willing to drive to' scale, in case you were wondering.

It all makes sense. I grew up in what some may refer to as 'the country' and I still retain my sense of distance from that childhood. If it takes you half an hour to get there, it's close. If it takes you an hour, it's still reasonably close.
I was once moderately amused when a friend (also from a country background) and I once commented to another friend on how close the city was from where we were at the time. "It's half an hour away!" the suburban friend responded in disbelief, quite incapable of realising how closed that sounded to the two country girls.

I'm a suburbs girl, but I still have a pretty good idea of what is close, as long as I know where it is. For instance, I've heard of vermont south, and I know it's on my half of Melbourne, but I have no idea where it is. Mitcham, on the other hand, I do know where it is.
Most of close is a) how long it takes o get there, and b) whether or not parents are willing to drive there. Some things come under a but not exactly b. Or they'll do it, but they'll complain. My parents love it when I want them to drive me somewhere really close, rather than asking them to drive me to Box Hill and pick me up the next day or something.

It sounds like an ideal situation - close to the city but surrounded by bush. Mmmm.... I miss my countryside.

Yes country side! instead of a villa with a concrete path for a backyard!
