I'm thinking of doing a map that shows the location of as many Ober.netters as possible. It could be fun to see where everyone is in relation to everyone else.
In the meantime, I'll settle for this poll. Apologies to anyone who's from the Northern Territory or a more specific area than 'The rest of the world'. The poll only allowed me to list eight options, curse its shiny metal hide.
So - is anyone interested in contributing to a map of Ober.netters?

I don't know. I like the idea, but I'm not gonna tell anyone my location on a map- it's scary thinking people might know where I live- even me! Soz, I'm stubborn. I would like to though, but I couln't take part.

Don't worry - I've thought about that. It could be anonymous. You'd just be a nameless red dot, sitting more or less in your area. If people wanted to put their name on the red dot, then that would be fine. If they'd rather stay nameless, that would be equally fine. Of course, it might mean giving me a suburb name in an email, but the email would be deleted immediately after I'd made a note of it. And I promise I wouldn't track you down. (I can't afford it at present.)

That could work. I don't have any really solid plans for the map at the moment, just vague ideas - so I'm hoping people's suggestions will help sort out the kinks in the concept.

Buneater, it does sound like an interesting idea. Maybe instead of suggesting a suburb, people can instead say, "East of Melbourne" or "draw a line between Sydney and Adelaide, and I'm about halfway". You're right in that no-one needs to know exact whereabouts. NatAlly (if you happen to read this again) - would you be happier with that...? Lauren

what if u could do a virtual webby thing...like have the map up and u ur self put the 'dot' where u live...that way u dont have to tell anyone ...
i no that options a hard one, but yea...i like the idea...and im more then happy to help out if i could...wat if u even said ur nearest big city...egs syney, coff harbour, byron bay, wagga wagga, dubbo... regional area instead... im sure there are ways that arent too specific...if u get me?! but love the idea

GO NSW! yeah, i was going to say the same thing as Miska. Another forum i visit did that...they had a map, and you clicked on your location, typed in your name and voila! instead of putting your name in, you could just say anonymous or something...yeah.

yeah, Good idea, Brydie! we can just have a few big towns from each state on the map, and then you pick the one you're closest to! ;D i think that could work..

thats y i suggested regions...cso towns are few and far between...so i no nsw is split into syd metro, north coast, central coast, south coast, and like 2 or 3 other regions... which would prob give a better indication...unless u did it u self..like the forum u metioned arien...cos u could put wat u wanted then and it would b accurate...

Wow - I'm glad so many people are interested in this idea! Arien> If you have a link to this forum-with-the-map, I'd be most interested. I certainly don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable about any aspect of this map. So, how does the following idea appeal to people... 1. I start a new thread asking for people's locations. 2. You can make an anonymous comment with your location. 3. You can be as specific or as general as you like. 4. You can also decide to make a signed comment with your location, if you're OK with it. The alternative is to have a locked thread, which no-one but members could see. The only potential problem with that is that you would have to sign in to see and comment on it. But on the up side - no total strangers would see it. So - what appeals? What doesn't? And is there anything I've overlooked? Thanks for the feedback so far - it has been incredibly helpful.

hmmm i personally dont mind ...but i think hte thread mite be a little risky...wat if u can say deleate the entries as soon as uve seen then and placed them on the map? .. that way it wouldnt matter if its locked or not (well not too much) and the infor wouldnt be laying round there for ages...

I like this concept. I'm excited to be a part of it!
And everyone knows so well where I live, already, cos I'm always whinging. (Or being patriotic about it!)

Thanks, Arien - that'd be great.
I'll probably make a start on the whole thing in the coming week. It would probably fit in nicely on the Ober.net website, too.

Go Victorians!!!
hehe - i'm fine with saying where I live - well not my exact address - but there are lots of houses in my suburb so by me saying I live in Mitcham there’s more then a few hundred houses in it so that makes it pretty hard for anyone to find me... but i like the region idea for those who are worried about naming a suburb... so i could say south east Victoria...
but even if you go with the dot on a map - depending on the size of the map, it would probably cover a few suburbs and then you don't have to name the suburb which would make it alot safer . So by seeing my dot someone could think i live in any one of the suberbs that are near mine.
So anyway, I think it's a great idea!!!

Those are all valid and sensible points, Emerald! Thank-you. I certainly won't be using people's real names or anything - it'll be your Ober.net identity only (or an anonymous dot, if you prefer). Essentially, people will be able to decide if they want to put their name on the map, or not, and if they want to put in a specific area... or not.
