Results for the 8th General Debate are as follows:
1st: Orior 2nd: ShadowKat 3rd: Katherine and Emzie Honourable Mention: Anne
Good stuff! Absolutely amazing arguments and everyone who participated in the debate is to be congratulated. It took me so long to narrow down the field of contendors. If only I could give you all points!
Anyways, the next thing on the agenda is to pick a new debate topic. Something theory-based on the books would be nice since we just had an ethical debate. But really anything that does not have a definite answer and something people will definitely disagree on.
Any suggestions?
(And no, not Dameon vs Rushton!!!!!!) ;D

What about.... Is there any chance that the misfits will one day be accepted as 'normal'?
Or.... What do you think Maruman means when he says there will be nothing left for Elspeth?
These are some "theories" based ones that I think are quite open-ended.

Oh... yes and no answers. I suppose... otherwise it's not much of a debate!! We want to get fiery. We want something controversial!!! Now that I think about it, I can't imagine anyone answering "yes, the misfits will be accepted as perfectly normal" because that's unlikely to ever be the case. Hmm.... I'll have to think harder.

How's about:
1. Is the evolution of the misfits simply "natural" genetic engineering? What are the implications of this to today's debate over whether genes should be altered?
it's a bit sciency that one and not very related to the Obernewtyn Chronicles but debaters must link it back to the series?
2. Has the Great White had a positive affect on the world?
there's probably a lot more to argue in this one...
anyways there's my two cents...points...

"Who kidnapped Rushton?" That debate is going on in the theories board right now. Could be interesting to do.

I like it Megana, but it isn't yes or no.
Those are both interesting ones, Rainelk. I like the 2nd one.

Awe, damn. Forgot about that. Ok, on a sadistic note - "Is Elspeth gonna die at the end of the sending?"

How about:
Does the Guild system promote division within the Obernewtyn community?
Oh, I'm sure I can do better than that...

Hey I like that one about the guilds. I think that's more the sort of thing we're after.
Megana, I think we've already canvassed the "is Elspeth going to die at the end"... most of us seem to think that it's just not possible simply because the books are written in first person. She'd have to die on the last line of the last page.... which of course is possible but also unlikely.
But I'm all for the "who kidnapped Rushton"! One of my favourite theories and one of the few where I'm totally opposite to Min! hehehe

I think if we did 'who kidnapped Rushton' we'd just be back in theories land, and arguing theories and debating a question aren't exactly the same thing, which is why we have two boards. Also it doesn't have a yes/no answer, so I think it'd get wildly out of control... Anyway, that's my two cents worth. Lol

i agree, i dont think it should be really theories-based. i think something ober-related but a bit more obscure would be the best way to go. something maybe about the herders and their attitude towards misfits, maybe? hmmm....someone asked a good question in the dining hall about the spirit call (in ashling when elf was dying and she felt the spirit call of someone who wanted her to live or something) but that isn't a yes or no question! what about...something to do with the teknoguilders and their interest in the past? OR...what was that thing that garth found in the keeping place to do with hannah seraphim? should he open it or should he leave it?/

What about... do you think the Council did a good job of bringing order to society after the Great White? What should they have done differently and what should have been kept the same?

It'd also be good to have one where there is some chance of people being divided in their opinions. With the matriarchy one not very many people argued against it...

Brydie - I think your thinking about Jacob Obernewtyn's grave. That could actually be a good one. "Should the grave be raised and opened?" We would end up with an arguement about the morality of raising graves to feed to quest of knowlage. Is it justifiable?
Well, that's my bit.

what about is it right to seek to discover oldtimer technology is it right to develope new technology this refers to the obernewtyn chronicles because the great white was caused by technology is it right to destroy oldtimer books as the knowledge could be helpful basically technology could be our destroyer or our savior how should it's research and developement be treated
alternitively if godzilla and kingkong had a fight which would win

A new debate has been opened: www.obernewtyn.net/events.html Brilliant suggestions for the topics by the way, peoples.... enough to keep a steady flow of debates over the next year or two. Many thanks to Lol for coming up with the topic for this debate: Does the Guild System promote division within the Obernewtyn Community? Anyways. Good luck and have fun
