I'm chilling up here in North Eastern USA...well, actually thawing out, thankfully, as spring has finally sprung in my area. *dances* Nothing too exciting up here...I live in one of the cloudiest parts of the country, so when it's not snowing it's raining, and when it's not raining it's storming Except today, because it's absolutely beautiful out! I'd love to visit where you all live...New Zealand and England and Australia....gee, I've got some traveling I need to do.

You'll probably feel at home in England. We get lots of clouds and rain too (or so everyone says!) ;D

lol seems like u have 4 pubs and one restaurant thats so sweet We do have four pubs, but i wouldn't drink in any of them! They're a bit dodgy! We have a chinese restaurant and two takeaways, and Indian restraunt/takeaway, a coffee shop in the department store, a kebab/pizza takeaway, four estate agents, four banks, one medium sized supermarket, two smaller ones, a bakery, fishmongers, greengrocer (x2) chemist, newsagent, a carpet shop, greetings card shop, various charity shops, a jewlers/antique dealers, florsit (x2), video rental store, and a few other odd shops. We also have a library and sports centre. We also have our own station on the mainline to London. Not bad for a town with a population of about 20,000

The next stop down from us is like that. Its for a tiny village called Beltring, and all there is is a platform.
I guess you guys use the trains a lot for travelling round the coutnry then?

yup, i'd say that trains and buses (and trams for melb) are the main transport for those who don't have a car

But if you are travelling around Australia, the main transport is either driving or by plane. Trains are a bit slow!! Not like Japan, as they have bullet trains that go 300 km and hour!

I'm suprised you don't have faster trains in Australia, considering the distances that have to be travelled!

Yeah, it would make sense, wouldn't it? For some reason, a lot of transport to the country areas is neglected in favour of people driving there themselves in a car... which is all very well, but it's often quite a long way to drive.
I like trains. ;D

It's the same here. A lot of rural villages have to rely on cars, as there is no bus services to some places.
Aparently our government want more people to use public transport, but if they don't invest in it then why should people use it!
I love my car!
What are your trains like? On our lines (especialy in the southeast where i live) the rolling stock is nearly 60 years old! Plus the trains are dirty, sometimes covered in grafiti, and aren't always reliable.
The best trains i've been on so far are the doubledecker ones in Canada. They were spotless!

I'm suprised you don't have faster trains in Australia, considering the distances that have to be travelled! My dad is always saying that!! But its probably because we don't have enough people. However, we do have 2 cheap airlines.

cheap airlines are always good! However, i suspect it's still less hassle to get a train than it is to go through an airport check-in

i agree wit u darkone! esp if its heathrow airoport! argh! thats a huge and confusing place! plus u have to walk everywhere and im sure u have to cover the whole 5mile distance on each sitting!

Well, it all depends, really. For instance, if you decide to travel to the country by train on a public holiday (ie. Good Friday), then you'll spend twenty minutes in a queue waiting to pick up pre-booked tickets and then you'll spend another twenty minutes hauling your luggage through the station, which just happens to be in the middle of renovations... and reach your train with about half a minute to spare before it leaves.
But yes, I would agree, it's slightly easier to catch a train than a plane. On the plus side, you certainly don't have to deal with all those issues such as fear of heights and fear of terrible crashes brought on by watching too much Lost.

Someone else that knows the joys of Heathrow! It is the busiest airport in Europe, though Gatwick isn't much better!

well buneater...i do agree but train crashes can be jsut as bad...*sigh* crashes are jsut evil!
anyway yes darkone! heathrow is apain in teh bum!!! argh i went thru there in feb! it seriously took us 2hrs to get out of the airport AFTER we had actually collected our bags and gotten thru costoms! like honestly! 2 flights coming in from austraila one is in terminal 2 the other in terminal 4 u walk the whole lenght of the terminal to grab the train and walk the whole way back thru the next terminal to meet up with teh person on teh other flight! then to make things better the car registration station was in terminal 3 and the car was parked near terminal 1!!! i think i saw the whole airoport! *sigh* that day was exhausting! and i vowed never to get a connecting flight in that airoport! its not that its hard to navigate! gosh its better then sydney or phillie or JFK for that matter - but tis just soooo big u could never make the next flight in time!

I have been to Heathrow, on the way to Spain. Heathrow is massive!!! But I was with my dad, so it was ok, I didn't have to do anything At least most people speak english at Heathrow, last time I went to Japan there was a problem with my passport and my Japanese is very limited.

Heathrow is a nightmare! Trying to drive round it is even worse.
I went to pick up my friend and his gfriend from there a couple of years ago. They'd been to Australia for a month, and then she had to fly back to Austria.
I think i had 10mins to bundle them into the car, race across the airport, and then get them to the right terminal for the connecting flight.
I think i've got the Heathrow airport speed record (though thankfully there were no police around to confirm it!)
