I know I should be sympathising, but you're just making me jealous. You've reminded me of when I was playing the flute for my school's production of The Pirates of Penzance. It was so much fun and we were just lost and empty when it ended. I'd offer to swap with you, but I do believe we play slightly different instruments. When I was in the school orchestra, we flutes had an on-going battle with the trumpets. Do you have a similar rivalry with the woodwinds? Or do orchestras get on better these days? (Actually, we quite liked the people who played the trumpets, it was just their general loudness and the way they drowned us out that we had problems with... ;D )

I remember my school productions and band concerts..... we did this one for House of the Rising Sun, and it was entirly percussion, and anyone who knows me will tell you i have two left hands, feet, and run into walls, no matter how brightly clad they are... anyway, that's not the issue. I was also doubling as a set design assistant. And i would fiercly tell the actors not to use the stage just after we had painted it, because they were wearing their heavy boots and making dents in the paint work. I pleaded my case, and the director agreed....
then they used the bloody stage WITH shoes on, even tho i said "If you have to use the stage, at least take off your shoes." One of the stupid up-themselves actors wore her bloody docs on, and stamped her feet across the stage several times.
As i was one of the few people in that stupid 'orchestra' as my music teacher called it (i wouldn't have even called it a band) anyway, i was one of about three who could read music. So my main role was the xylaphone and anything else that had a frigging tune. And this positioned me in full site of the actors. Well, i got kinda ticked when that was goinf on and instead of playing p i think i was closer to ff I was ff well angry at them! GAH!
Anyway, i have no idea where that rant came from, i was a clarinet player stuck with percussion and a control freak of a set designer watching the actors abuse it in one person... it wasn't a good play.
But i can understand cabin-fever. Sometimes you sit about waiting for so damn long, and the director keeps glaring at you so you can't talk really. Instead you sit, and wait, and wait, and wait.... drives you insane... so i hope you have better luck with it! just think, there's always that something magical about the performance you're rising up too.... that was the one thing i miss, the performing... *sigh*

We used to play cards, although it was difficult, sitting right up next to a piccolo, who was squished against the edge of the pit. Then again, we were allowed to play our rightful instruments and everyone in the band was great with fantastic senses of humour. On the last night, we all wore stupid hats and almost killed the cast, who weren't expecting to look down into the pit and see a bunch of loons. This must be why I keep wanting to have a silly hat theme next...

I used to play trumpet for the school band, and it was a nightmare. We were meant to play at a concert, but we all freaked so we didnt have to do it Good thing too, because i originally signed up for flute in year 7. Then the music teacher got back tp me a few weeks later and told me that there was already too many flute players at school, and i could play any other instrument i wanted....as long as it was trumpet or trombone There were two other flute players. Two! Then at the concert a couple of years ago, i was playing bass, guitar and drums, and none of us were allowed to practise. It wasn't so bad with the individual guitar playing, because we could practise at home. I had that problem when i had to play bass in a band of four, and we werent allowed to actually play the song all together for the first time until about an hour before the concert, so we had no idea what we were doing

Rivalry.... you bet......
French horns are officially allies with the following instruments:
1) TUBAS because they are cool itself.... 2) FLUTES who can actually play well 3) CLARINETS who can actually play well (such as Rillola) 4) GRAND PIANOS because they sound good 5) VIOLINS who play well and know what they are doing and don't screech 6) VIOLAS (although we pretend not to) 7) DOUBLE BASSES even though I do not agree with this
French horns are officially enemies with the following instruments:
1) TRUMPETS because they drown out the whole band and always bag out horns 2) FLUTES who do not play well 3) CLARINETS who do not play well 4) TROMBONES because they are evil and annoying 5) GUITARS for similar reasons
And bascially everything else is either an enemy or a consciencious objector
The cabin fever is getting worse and so is the feeling of impending doom. Tomorrow we perform. We have not yet done an entire runthrough from start to finish and some of the horn music just DOES NOT WORK!!!!!!!! Our stupid teachers are kidding themselves. IT IS NOT TOTALLY AWESOME... IT IS TOTALLY CRAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!
Yikes! You just reminded me... I have music exams in 3 weeks..... nooooooo............
I think I will just curl up into a ball and die until this is over.....
From Innle the ranting still cabin feverish tired annoyed and now suddenly overly stressed wanderer.

Innle - what musical is your school putting on? French horns are officially enemies with the following instruments: 1) TRUMPETS because they drown out the whole band and always bag out horns. I'm glad to see the tradition is being carried on. Trumpets are just too loud to exist.

trumpets just make me think of Gordon.... (he's a fictional character a teacher thought up who had a breathing problem yet played trumpet... i'm guessing not well)

I had to do a solo ina guitar ensemble for the eisteddford. I really sucked becasue I'd never really done solo stuff before and they only gave me a days notice. They didn't want me to make one up, they wanted me to go impromptu. But i'd never done much (any) impromptu. It was fun though. Sometimes its more fun when you know its all hopeless.

What about xylophones?

*blinks* um... well, its like a piano sort of thing but you hit it with a stick, and its smaller and is just some metal-ly rectangular things on a base of two long thin wood/metal peices. blah, that was a really bad explanation

I play the violin and the only brass/woodwind person I'm friends with is a French horn player! I'm also friends with a Saxophone player ... but they weren't on your list ...

Ohhhhh, how can I forget? Saxaphones are definitely on the enemies list because they also bag us out. The ones at our schools have very big egos too. Xylophones are cool. They are not eactly on our allies list because we don't have any at our school but they are alot of fun. Premiere performance yesterday.... it sucked so badly...... it was really awful.....

Back to the 80's. "A totally awesome awful musical" which is a compilation of all the trashy 80's songs and dance routines that everyone was happy to forget...

God, i remember hating the flutes. My merry band of clarinetists would spend most of the time bagging the flutes out, esp. when they would do they dip before a note in sync. All bob their heads in rhythm, v. funny. Oh, and the bass Clarinet used to sit behind me, and would delight in making me jump by suddenly playing a deep sharp note at random moments... and the trombonists who would whack me behind the head when they sat behind me one of them was once my conductor, he thought it highly amusing.....
When i was at band, it was the oboe, the picalo, and the trumpets who i got along with... funny how it's different..

It does have a beautiful sound.... but persistence my bonne amie!!!!! I have contemplated quitting one zillion times but am rapidly improving, and the good times definitely weigh out the bad!!!!!!!!!!
My sister did violin but she gave up because she didn't like it very much... heaps of the people at our school play it because they had to at their steiner primary school.
This is random but seeing as I am doing my french homework, I'll give you the french translation of that last sentence (without the accents because I don't know how to put them in):
Ma soeur joue le violon mais elle quitte parce que elle ne aime pas ca.... beacoup de gens a ma ecole jouent le violon parce qu' on faut a ses l'ecole primaire de steiner.
