Pizza? Roger that February 9, 2005 - 12:53PM A British army pilot has been disciplined by senior officers for using a tank-busting helicopter to deliver a pizza to his girlfriend. Following the recent controversy over a Sydney fireman allegedly using a fire truck to fetch pizza, the 659 Army Air Corps squadron pilot was on a map-reading training drill when he dropped off the pizza to his girlfriend, who was taking part in an exercise 50 km away. The 25-year-old lieutenant, based in in Suffolk, had picked up the takeaway before setting out on the sortie in his Lynx helicopter, the Sun newspaper reported today. He was reprimanded but did not have his pilot's licence taken away, the paper added. "The opportunity to add a light-hearted element to the planned sortie was taken but with no detriment to the sortie objective," a UK defence ministry spokeswoman told Reuters. "The chain of command do not condone these actions and have disciplined the individuals concerned." www.smh.com.au/news/World/Pizza-Roger-that/2005/02/09/1107890251472.html
Rugby nutter February 9, 2005 Page Tools Email to a friend Printer format A Welsh rugby fan cut off his own testicles to celebrate Wales beating world champions England at rugby in Cardiff for the first time in 12 years. Geoff Huish, 26, told drinkers at a social club: "If Wales win I'll cut my balls off," the Daily Mirror and The Sun reported. Friends at the club in Caerphilly, south Wales, thought he was joking. But after Saturday's Six Nations match which Wales won 11-9 when Gavin Henson kicked a 45-metre penalty, Huish went home and reportedly cut off his testicles with a knife. He then walked 200 metres back with the testicles to show the shocked drinkers what he had done. Huish was taken to hospital where he remained in a seriously ill condition, the papers said. www.smh.com.au/news/Unusual-Tales/Rugby-nutter/2005/02/08/1107625213777.html

Something more sombre: Lonely whale's song remains a mystery 10:22 10 December 2004 Exclusive from New Scientist Print Edition Jon Copley A lone whale with a voice unlike any other has been wandering the Pacific for the past 12 years. Marine biologist Mary Ann Daher of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts, US, and her colleagues used signals recorded by the US navy’s submarine-tracking hydrophones to trace the movements of whales in the north Pacific. The partially declassified records show that a lone whale singing at around 52 hertz has cruised the ocean every autumn and winter since 1992. Its calls do not match those of any known species, although they are clearly those of a baleen whale, a group that includes blue, fin and humpback whales. Blue whales typically call at frequencies between 15 and 20 hertz. They use some higher frequencies, but not 52 hertz, Daher says. Fin whales make pulsed sounds at around 20 hertz, while humpbacks sing at much higher frequencies. The tracks of the lone whale do not match the migration patterns of any other species, either. Over the years the calls have deepened slightly, perhaps because the whale has aged, but its voice is still recognisable. Daher doubts that the whale belongs to a new species, although no similar call has been found anywhere else, despite careful monitoring. And something slightly disgusting: Future rations: pee soup July 22, 2004 Hungry soldiers with limited water supplies and only dried food rations to eat could soon be using dirty swamp water or even urine to hydrate their food, a science magazine said yesterday. In a new technique, the dried rations are packed in a pouch with a special filter that removes 99.9 per cent of the bacteria and toxic chemicals from whatever liquid is used. "The pouch - containing chicken and rice initially - relies on osmosis to filter the water or urine," according to New Scientist magazine. The rations were developed by US Army scientists who two years ago developed an indestructible sandwich that stayed edible for up to three years. Their aim is to reduce the amount of water soldiers need to carry. To hydrate the food, a soldier pours liquid on one end of the foil sachet. It seeps through the pouch and a membrane into the food. But researchers at Hydration Technology of Albany, Oregon, which makes the membrane, said soldiers should only use urine in an emergency because the membrane does not filter out urea, a compound contained in urine. Rehydrating food this way over the long term could cause kidney damage. www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/07/21/1090089223411.html

Clare Explores the World of Extreme Ironing Extreme Ironing ClashMay 17, 2004 British "sport" of extreme ironing is travelling to America, with two weeks of events at some of the nation's greatest landmarks, including Mount Rushmore and Times Square. Extreme ironing sees competitors attempt to press shirts while undertaking high-risk sports like rock climbing or canoeing. A group of British extreme ironists, who triumphed at the world championships in Munich in 2002, are now headed for America. One day, they hope, the sport will be recognised as an Olympic discipline. The two-week extreme ironing tour kicks off in Boston tomorrow and continues in the Black Hills of South Dakota at Mount Rushmore. The finale will be seen in Times Square, New York, on Memorial Day, May 31. "After our victory at the Extreme Ironing World Championships in 2002, I knew there was no other place for us to go but America," said the sport's founder Phil "Steam" Shaw, 30, from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/05/17/1084646120747.html?from=storylhs
I come from a family who despises ironing... infact, my brothers have given up ironing completely unless they have aims of impressing their girlfriends or potential girlfriends. Ironing has long been considered the realm of the Vain, the Beautiful and The People With Too Much Time On Their Hands. Yet at the home of Extreme Ironing, --> www.extremeironing.com/ ironing is not just a way of de-creasing business shirts but a way of de-creasing business shirts in an adrenalin rush of adventure. Extreme ironing! It's hilarious! I laughed out loud at the picture of the guy doing the handstand on the ironing board. Ah, ironing... I remember that. I just hang my clothes up in the wardrobe and hope that gravity will eliminate any wrinkles.

A Baby Bear Cub: www.smh.com.au/ftimages/2005/02/10/1107890283819.htmlAnd Something for Lauren of Fred:
A badly injured seagull was saved after its wounded leg was amputated and replaced with parts from a Barbie doll. Florida's Local 6 News reports the seagull was operated on by the crew of a yacht visiting the city of Antalya, Turkey. The crew, apparently inspired by peg-leg pirates, amputated the bird's leg and created a new one using a Barbie doll's leg. They made a foot from the doll's hand. The seagull has made a good recovery and is now walking, and even running, around the boat on the new leg. www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/07/12/1089484304989.html?from=storylhs

A Dutch farmer has painted pigeons pink and green to ward off hungry birds of prey, and it seems to have worked. "I'm crazy about the birds ... Naturally, birds of prey are going to eat pigeons, but preferably not here," the farmer told Holland's Algemeen Dagblad. He began painting the birds with environmentally friendly, water-based paint a year ago. "The colours make the pigeons seem unsuitable as prey. The birds of prey simply don't recognise them any more," he said. www.smh.com.au/news/Unusual-Tales/Fancier-pigeons/2005/02/17/1108609347484.html--------------------------------------------------------

Hey people, don't knock extreme ironing - it's the only "sport" the British are good at - I believe we are, in fact, number one in the world...that is possibly because no one else wants to participate...

**looks confused** Nobody is knocking extreme ironing. It's the BEST thing since the World Rock Paper Scissors Society's Strategy Guides.
World Rock Paper Scissors Society (http://www.worldrps.com/), a society that sports much appreciation from its members.
To quote a post on the Bull Board: "Thanks RPS for making me a hit with the ladies!"

HoD - I'm still waiting for the movie to load, but honestly, where the hell did they get that idea? lol. And the second one.....well, they deserve to have their street convered in rotting guts. They were probably gonna eat the whale anyway, which isn't right. So yeah, I hope they all smell now. ;D
