Right, here we have a 'comprehensive' list of the rules. Or at least I hope so...
OK, I'm going to start at the beginning. Someone becomes a mod. For all of our games so far, that's me. This means I run the game.
I then ask people to sign up, which they do. After a while, the mod closes applications and randomnly assigns roles and writes a character bio for everyone and sends it to them. I'll put an example of one in here in a minute.
Roles
Basically, you can be two kinds of people - mafia or townie. There may be variations, but this is using the basic version and what each player should know going into the game.
Mafia - A minority group of players who know of each other's existence. Each night they talk to each other and decide on a victim and an assassin (from their ranks). The designated person then informs the mod.
Townies - Everyone else. Some of the townies have special abilities they can do at night. These include investigator, doctor, person who can restrict someone from killing / being killed etc. Not all townies have abilities in all games.
An example of a bio given to player (in this case mafia) might be:
Hey Bob,
It seems you're a member of the resistance... *rants about setting and sets character - in this the mod would disclose any other information about this character, eg a weakness if that person is to know about their weakness (if they have one, not all players have them)*
Night Abilities:
At night you must contact Bobette and Bill and decide who shall be your victim and who shall be the assassin. Bobette, the head of mafia, will then PM me, the Mod.
Playing
There are two states of play in the game of mafia - Day and Night. These don't follow normal days and nights, they go for as long as it takes for them to be completed.
Night - This is when each individual character's Night Abilities section comes into play. The mafia talk amongst themselve and all people who have been told to PM the mod with their night choices do. Once the mod has all the night choices they will distribute any information etc the people need to know (if the game has an investigator, for instance, they will get information before day break, this is all told in the character bio) and announces day break. At the beginning of day the mod will announce who (if anyone) has died in the night and what their character was.
During the night all players are silent on the playing thread.
Day - This is when all players convene on the thread and try to figure out who is mafia. The members of the mafia pretend they are townies at this time. When players decide who they believe to be a mafia member, they vote for them. This is done like this:
VOTE BOB
Once a majority is reached, the mod announces who will be 'lynched' or killed and tells the reamaining players what that person's role was. The game then returns to night.
Voting - A vote should be seperate and in caps from the text to assist the mod with counting and so they can tell who is voting and who is musing. Once a player has voted they can unvote up to the time when a majority is reached. This means that if Cat-Eyes has just voted Bob in a new post she can say
UNVOTE BOB
and the vote will no longer be counted. This can't be done once the mod has declared the lynching.
A player may also vote 'no lynch'. This is not a refusal to vote, it is a vote for no one (to be lynched). This is said in the same way and if a majority of no lynch is gained, the game returns to night without anyone dying.
Ok? If you have any questions, ask away in this thread.
Cheers,
Cat (God that took a long time)
