hey! I was not bagging out Ethereals guy. Rushton is wonderful! I never said he was the worst kind of guy u could get, just that he has some faults, which everyone has. and anyway what some people see as faults may not be what others see as being faults anyway. btw I'd definately date a Rushton-esqe guy if I knew one, he'd be better than most of the guys I know now. I just think that Dameon is the better person and is the best for Elf but science he's a book character he's allowed to be perfect ;D

Yeap, sorry talisha. I do passionately believe that Rushton is possessive and selfish. He reflects it more so on Elf than anything else, but that may only be apparent because we see everything from the book from Elspeth's point of view. I know he puts a lot at risk in allowing the Misifts to stay at Obernewtyn. But really he's only the leader of Obernewtyn by blood. He's a title owner, not an elected leader like Brydda or Dardelan. I think it was silly of him to think that he could pull the Misfits out of the rebellion (I agree with Domick - you have to be on someone's side, for your own protection when it's over). I know I seem overly harsh of him - I'm re-reading Ashling at the moment to try remember why I used to like him. In it, Elspeth talks of how she fears Rushton. Often she thinks about Dameon's kindness, and ends up thinking about Rushton's posessiveness, and why he invokes fear in her - sure, she's scared of the quest complications if she lets herself fall for him. I am making a point, relevant to this post Elspeth obviously thinks that Dameon is the better person, even if she doesn't admit it. She talks of Dameon only with kindness - with Rushton, fear. Poor Dameon though I guess it's true in that nice guys always finish last

haha Kayt, I thought the foot was already down??
I think you have some point Min, she does appear to think of Dameon as the better person, but we cant know for sure. I think she regarded Rushton with fear, because she feared what was inside him, as well as her own feelings. She spent her entire life blocking people out and never letting anyone close. In Obernewtyn, she said it was lonely to do so, but she felt it was neccessary. Blocking people out made her feel secure, and the thought of giving that up can be very frightening. I know some of you guys know what I'm talking about, its hard to change the way you've been your whole life, especially when you feel like you're protecting yourself by doing it the way that you are, whatever it may be

The foot is down in a general way, Talisha.
You better hope I never lower it on this issue!
I do know what you mean about not wanting to change. Elf likes to shut people out.
But that only proves my point. Rushton forced his way in. Dameon respected Elf's right to let him in, in her own time.

lol i think you just called me brydie That's just the thing, I dont think RUshton did force his way in. He let elf know how he felt, but its not like he said 'look, i want you, so you'd better get used to it' Rushton knew that elf didnt let people in, and didnt understand why, all he wanted to know was why his love was being rejected... elf eventually made the decision to let him in, because, after she saw him and freya together, she realised that she should take a chance. Dames isnt waiting to let elf in in her own time, shes blind to the fact that dames is inlove with her. I think whether or not you like Rushton, he did a good thing for her, by helping her to open up, she even admitted to trying to be more understanding and working on her lack of empathy.

I'm TOTALLY for Rushton!!! ;D Dameon's great and all, but Rushton likes Elf and Elf likes Rushton!!! ;D And besides, heaps of other people at obernewtyn like Dameon, he can go find himself another girl and leave Rushton and Elf BE!!! Not that he would purposefully split them apart, but...

true, dames wouldnt try to split them up, and they have an understanding, Rushton and Dameon.
RUshton knows that Dames loves her, and Dames knows that she loves Rushton. Its sad for him, but its the way it goes.

'rushton would have a good old sulk'
alrighty, think about that one. I know im going to be pulverised for saying this, but Dameon sulks too. Everyone sulks, Dames just does it in his own private way. He's always looking sad now a days, and for good reason, but you cant just say that Rushton is a sook.
I honestly believe that Rushton wouldnt try to split up elf and dames if they were together, he would be hurt and upset, but he wouldnt plot against it.
Rushton is a good and caring man danmit!

ooo i no dames sulks too...im jsut saying rushton would be consious of the fact that dames is an empth and prob do nothin to hide his hurt, which is as good as sulking dilibrately...if u get where im coming from?! does it make sense!? i honestly cant go with either or against either...in my mind dames just isnt confronting enough, people like that tend to get pushed over and played...*shrugs*...i dont no...maybe this vodka will help

haha
sorry i just jump to rushtons aid
I dont think Rushton could hide his feelings?
Dames can hide them empathically, not that it matters considering Rushton and elf dont have empathy, but he obviously cant disguise them other wise cause Rushton knows.
I think we know more about Rushton's feelings because he just hear more about him from elf's pointof view. When dames is there, it tends to be when elf is talking about her problems, not his. Its usually focused on her involved with something else when it comes to dames, where as when we see Rushton, elf focuses her feeling about him to us, so we learn more of his feelings than dames.
i hope that made sense...
